• ENGLISH

    Degrees Offered:  Bachelor of Arts

    Program Overview

At the heart of ODU’s English program is great literature, which encompasses authors ranging from Chaucer to Shakespeare to Whitman to Morrison.  Our program provides more than just a foundation in poetry, novels and drama; in-depth courses on specific authors such as Henry James and John Donne and exciting topics such as vampire novels and films, contemporary poetry, and murder mysteries give you an opportunity to engage with literature in ways you never imagined. English majors also hone skills that are essential for any career; you will become a stronger writer, a better reader, and a more effective critical thinker.

    Key Points About the Major

    • The distinguished curriculum also includes courses in contemporary, international, women’s, and minority literatures to reflect the changing dynamics of the written word.
    • Poets, playwrights, and writers of fiction develop their talents in creative writing classes and have opportunities to be published in our literary journal, Gesture.
    • Program is flexible enough for students to add a minor.

    Why ODU?

Our small class size - particularly in upper-level courses - is ideal for studying literature and writing. You’ll get specialized attention from dedicated faculty members who care. And there are many exciting opportunities to get involved. Our English honorary club, Sigma Tau Delta, hosts a variety of fun activities throughout the year: movie nights, poetry readings, Scrabble tournaments, a birthday party for Shakespeare, and much more! In addition to finding satisfactory careers, graduates are challenged to think about needs, worldviews and perspectives of others different than their own; this is a very important characteristic in the job market and in all human relationships.

    Career Possibilities

The ODU English major offers career flexibility. In a changing job market, the ability to write, research, and communicate never go out of style. These skills are transferable, not just from the university to the work world, but among numerous professions. Our graduates are well prepared for professional programs such as law, education, arts administration, management, and marketing.

    On Campus Opportunities

Sigma Tau Delta is a national English honorary society with a very active chapter on the ODU campus. Each year, this motivated group of students organizes many on-campus activities—the hilarious “Bad Writing” Contest each fall, an annual Valentine’s Day Love Poetry Reading and much more.  The campus literary journal, Gesture, is a great way to publish your poems, short stories and other writing. The Tower, ODU’s student newspaper, is always looking for writers with a unique perspective on issues and events that are important to the campus community.
