This newsletter is a
report on the different initiatives and activities that supported Division of
Business programs, students, and faculty during this academic year. We are
excited that a relatively large number of students attended and participated in
several seminars and professional activities organized and/or sponsored by the

On behalf of the
faculty, I extend my sincere appreciation to all the members of the program
advisory boards whose service benefits our students inside and outside the
classroom. ODU’s new Bachelor of Science in Insurance and Risk Management and
Master of Science in Medical Practice Management degree programs are being
supported by strong advisory boards comprised of business and community
participation in various organizations have become integral parts of student
experiences in the Division of Business. Faculty are committed to developing
more opportunities for professional growth through student internships and
increased interactions with program advisory boards.
Ken C. Fah, Ph.D.Chair and Associate
ODU’s Insurance & Risk Management major was
mentioned in a variety of media regarding a new statewide study that suggests
there will be 26,000 job openings in the insurance field in Ohio between now
and 2020. ODU was mentioned on News radio WTAM 1100’s April 3 broadcast, on
NBC4’s web page, and in the April 7 edition of The Business Journal.
ODU Division of Business (DOB) has been
successful in recruiting volunteers to speak to the students on many occasions
this year. These professionals offer the students real-life experience and
advice which is an invaluable addition to the curriculum that they are studying

practice of Paul C. Carbetta II, of Comprehensive Wealth Partners, a private
wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. has sponsored
four seminars this year.
Brandon Lindley, Regional Vice President of
Asset Management with Columbia Management, spoke on “Analysis of Investor
Behavior.” John Reymann gave the next three presentations. In November his
presentation was titled “Building an Investment Policy Statement.” In February,
he presented, “Wealth Creation for the Future with Sensible Debt Reduction
Strategies,” and on April 30, he gave his last presentation for the year on
“Advanced Investment Strategies.”
Another speaker series that the Division of
Business offers is the popular, Conversations with Entrepreneurs.
This program features a local entrepreneur who is willing to share their
experience with students. The program consists of a brief explanation of the
business including history, products, challenges, and/or opportunities. Deana
Gordon, Associate Director of the Conway Center for Family Business has been
instrumental in lining up the outstanding speakers for these seminars.
year we were fortunate to have Jerry and Bret Bordner from Laser Reproductions
in November and Debra Penzone from The Charles Penzone Salons in April. We are
very thankful for these leaders taking time out of their busy schedules to
enrich the education of ODU business students.
The directors of the MBA
and the Physician Assistant (PA) Program worked together this year to offer two
events this spring. The first event titled “Social Media: Job Search &
Professional Expectations” was held in March. In this event Professor Natalie
Kompa, Coordinator of the Public Relations program at ODU, and Janet Doyle, a
Senior Recruiter for Atrium Tech Solutions, shared their perspectives on
leveraging social media as a part of professional searches and networking.
On April 9, graduate
students were invited to the second event this spring. The title for this
program was “Negotiation: Salary, Promotion and You.” Professor Terry Burns
shared his expertise in negotiation as a faculty member teaching MBA 622
Conflict & Negotiation and his experience in negotiation in his 20+ year
career as Vice-President of Operations for International Harvester. Katie
Purcell, the Clinical Outreach Coordinator for the PA program focused her part
of the presentation on negotiating with regard to work-life balance concerns.
At the close of the presentations, students had the opportunity to attend
break-out sessions with both speakers to talk one-on-one about their particular
challenges in negotiating.
Rachel Collins, senior honors student majoring
in Accounting, presented her research project at the Senior Project
Presentation held on April 29. Her topic was: Internet Sales-Based
Retailers: Sales and Use Tax Compliance.
One of the two ODU
students who applied for a $2,000 scholarship from the Human Resources
Association of Central Ohio (HRACO) has won a scholarship. Jacqueline Doone was
given her check and recognition at the HRACO February lunch meeting.
The Student Services
Committee awarded one scholarship to an undergraduate student and one
scholarship to a graduate student. ODU’s Daniel Stone placed third in
the contest for graduate students. Both application packages were
commended for being well-written.
Jillian Cameron, Public Relations & Marketing Communications Senior
When you decide on your
major in college, you are making one of the biggest decisions of your life.
Like many college students, I struggled with confidently choosing a
major. I was aware of my skill set and interests, but I was unsure how to
best put them to use. I was scared that I wasn’t going to actually enjoy the
career path that came with my decision.
I knew the best gauge to
determine the soundness of my decision was to secure an internship where I
could test and build my skills. In April 2013, I started applying for a series
of paid, public relations internships on the state’s website: careers.ohio.gov.
Out of the four positions I applied for, I found one in the Communications
Division at the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) that caught my eye. This
position included everything that I was interested in, and a few things I
wanted to learn more about.
The interview process
was intimidating yet exciting. I was informed that I would be subjected to a
panel interview with four employees and competing against three others for the
position, so I knew I had to do my best. The interview was fairly simple. Each
employee asked me different questions, and after a while, the interview became
a group conversation.
I brought a folder with
examples of my writing and graphic design work, along with a copy of my resume.
As the interview came to a close, I shook hands and walked out feeling
confident. I received a call the next day inviting me to interview with the
Director of Communication, after which, I was offered the position.
It has been several
months since I started at ODI, and I am now confident that I made the right
decision when I picked my major. I have been fortunate to carry a large amount
of responsibility. I function as the main social media manager for both ODI,
and the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP). (Like us on
Facebook!) I do a great amount of graphic design, and I am one of the main
website editors. I have also had the opportunity to plan and execute two
department-wide blood drives, and I have made many friends along the way.
Out of all the things I
have learned during my internship experience, one of the biggest lessons is
that if you’re going to accomplish the goals you set, no one can make it happen
but yourself. Not everything will be easy, but taking that leap into the
business world is a vital part of preparing yourself for who you are going to
be, and what kind of career lies in your future.
Misencik, FAP Vice President
This year, Future
Accounting Professional’s (FAP) hosted several events to help educate and
inform ODU Accounting students. The first informational event was about the ODU
JobLine and was led by Gary Swisher, Director of Career Services. He explained
the benefits of ODU JobLine and gave tips on how to best utilize the site to
find internships and jobs.
The second event was
presented in September by Dr. Steve Martin of MDS CPA Review. This was the
fourth year for this popular seminar in which Dr. Martin presented about the
CPA exam including the requirements to sit for the exam as well as going over
all four parts in detail. He also educated students about the MDS program,
year-round classes that they offer, and how to get started.
The third event was a
Resume Builder Workshop. This workshop was led by the big-four firm, Deloitte,
and provided students with information on resume writing as well as selling
points that are beneficial for students to include on a resume. The fourth event
that FAP students participated in was the Fetch Program. ODU students attended
a local middle school in Columbus, and taught children the positive outcomes of
savings, revenue, and expenses in a fun, interactive game.
Lastly, in April, FAP
held a Mock Interview event at which professionals interviewed accounting
students. Business professionals from many different organizations such as
Clark Shafer Hackett, Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Schneider Downs
and Company, and Clarus Partners donated their time to make this event a
success. The mock interviews allowed students to receive valuable insight on
how the typical interview process functions, as well as, positive and negative
pointers on his or her resume.
ODU Investment Club
The Investment Club invited Bob Sponseller to speak at ODU on March 18. Bob is a Financial Advisor who also runs his own investment portfolio. His presentation titled “Investment Strategies” was open to the entire university community.
Each year, the Future
Accounting Professionals Club looks to host events that will further educate
and benefit ODU accounting students. These programs supplement what students
are learning inside the classroom and give students’ insight into what their
PRSSA - Small Chapter with Big Dreams of Expansion

The ODU Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is a small, yet mighty chapter that has continued to grow over the course of the academic year. At the start of fall semester, the chapter had four active and paid members and has since grown to 11. This growth has allowed the chapter to continue to assist students in increasing their professional network as well as reveal opportunities for professional development.
ODU PRSSA has held resume workshops open to all ODU students, attended conferences from North Carolina to Ohio, and has assisted companies in their social media marketing strategies and campaigns.
It has been an honor to be a part of such an amazing chapter over the course of my time here at Ohio Dominican. I have witnessed this chapter grow membership despite the adversities we faced. As I quickly approach graduation, I think about my own growth within the chapter. Beginning as Secretary and continuing to serve three semesters, as President has been a rewarding experience. I have gained an abundance of knowledge about the industry, expanded my professional network, and had multiple internship opportunities due to my involvement with PRSSA. I am proud of what this chapter has accomplished and I am confident they will continue to do great things.
For the 2014-2015 school year the chapter plans to continue growth of membership and professional development with conferences, workshops, tours of businesses, and beginning the process of starting a student-run firm under the presidency of Carrie Ghiloni. ODU PRSSA may be a small chapter compared to others in our region. However, what is not small is the drive that every member has to bring forth the vision of the chapter and its members.
Sport Management Society
ODU Sport Management Society members participated in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) Sportsmanship Awards selection. The Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity (SEI) Committee, along with ODU Sport Management Society students, selected 26 member schools to receive awards for the 2012-2013 academic year. The schools met the “Respect the Game Challenge,’ by completing a comprehensive checklist that confirms the various sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity programs within their school. Some schools were also awarded the Harold A. Meyer Award which is presented to schools that demonstrate via a PowerPoint presentation that they have completed an eight-part program that promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in their schools and communities. The applications and presentations were judged by students from the ODU Sport Management Society, led by student president Lacey Dent.
The student run Sport Management Society also invited Mark Grant, Television Director for CBS Sports, to speak to ODU students in October. Mark has been part of the CBS Family for 15 years and directs NFL and college football games, college basketball, golf and tennis. Prior to CBS, he was a director for ESPN for 11 years. He has won three Emmy awards as well as five ACE awards, the highest award in the cable industry. He spoke to the students, telling them his story of failures, hard work and his successes.
Finally, the Society hosted a panel and networking event for Sport Management Careers on April 29. There were speakers from six different organizations present. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and network with sports professionals from the Columbus area including the Columbus Crew, Ohio State Athletics, Ohio High School Athletics, and the Columbus Clippers.
Insurance and Risk Management Board of Advisors
Blair Crossan, MBA, is the Regional Vice President for the Central Plains region at Nationwide Insurance. In this role Blair is responsible for the profit and loss of multiple insurance and financial products spanning eight states and several distribution channels. Blair earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and his MBA from ODU. He has completed three parts of the Charter Life Underwriter designation. Blair serves as a board member for Children’s Medical Center (Dallas, TX) and The American Red Cross – Dallas chapter. He resides in Plano, Texas.
Douglas Ruml, CFM, M.A., cyRM, did his undergraduate studies at OSU, Hebrew and Ambassador Universities and his master’s degree was completed at California State University. He is currently working on his doctorate in Business Administration at Northcentral University. Doug completed the Certified Financial Manager program at the Donald Regan School in Princeton, as well as achieving several securities licenses. He is a registered Property, Casualty, Life, Accident & Health, Variable Life, and Variable Annuity agent. Doug began his career as a Reinsurance Broker in New York, then became co-founder of a British public software corporation, and was later an equity partner at a Columbus area insurance firm. As a global executive, Doug has lived in many foreign countries and speaks English, German, French and Bislama. He is co-author of the book World Religions in Brief and currently serves as a graduate adjunct professor in business schools at ODU and several other universities.
Jason Terrell is Managing Director at Griffith for The Institutes. In his role he works closely with the Engaging the Next Generation programs which include The Society, Loman and The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation. He also manages The Griffith Foundation’s K12 and higher education programs. Prior to this position, Jason was the Arbitration Manager at NAMIC and he graduated from Ball State University. Jason currently serves on several boards, including the National Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, the Society of Insurance Research, and Gamma Iota Sigma. Jason resides in Worthington with his wife and two boys.
Rick Walsh, CPCU, ANFI, SCLA, CPIA, RWCS, CRIS, CLCS, PLCS, MSC, is a Senior Training Consultant with over 17 years of insurance experience. Rick joined Motorists in 2005 as a Personal Lines Underwriter and was quickly promoted to Senior Underwriter then to a Training Specialist. He has been in his current position for over three years and specializes in insurance corporate training and continuing education for insurance agents and producers. Rick earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida and holds the designations of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Associate in National Flood Insurance, Senior Claim Law Associate, as well as Construction Risk Insurance Specialist. He is also a Certified Public Insurance Agent, and is the Director of Education for the CPCU Columbus Chapter. Rick lives in Bexley with his wife and their three children.
Mitchell Wilson, B.S., is the Vice President of Public Information and Education for the Ohio Insurance Institute (OII). Prior to this position, he served as the Director of Public Information and Education. His main responsibilities include the development and distribution of insurance information for reporters, consumers, insurers, teachers and high school students. The Ohio Insurance Institute is a trade association representing insurance companies and agent groups for the property/casualty insurance industry. Before joining the OII, Mitch served in a variety of underwriting and training positions with Motorists Insurance Companies. A 1980 graduate of OSU, Mitch majored in Insurance and Risk Management. He currently serves on the board of the Insurance Consumer Affairs Exchange.
Master of Business Administration Board of Advisors
Philip Sieber, MBA, is currently a Territory Sales Manager in South Western Ohio for Altria Group Distribution Company, responsible for managing and growing a $15 million dollar territory. Prior to his current role, he worked in the steel industry for the Columbus branch of Ryerson Inc. Here he started out as an inside sales representative specializing in fabrication and then took his skills out on the road when he became the Territory Manager for the state of Kentucky. Phil is an Eagle Scout and Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Phil earned his BSBA in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from Xavier University and most recently his MBA with a focus in Leadership from ODU.
Medical Practice Management Board of Advisors
Jim Barleycorn, M.S.A., is President of J. W. Barleycorn & Associates, Inc. which is a recognized retained search firm serving clients for over 26 years. The firm has provided the highest quality of candidates for hundreds of positions. Jim has more than 30 years of experience in executive search and human resource consulting. He has a Bachelor’s in Engineering and a Master’s in Human Resources from Central Michigan University. Jim also served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. Community service includes Jobs for Columbus Graduates, Celiac Foundation, Deaf Initiatives and The Columbus Foundation.
Lori Bergman, MBA, is a Senior Consultant with Comprehensive Healthcare Advisors. After graduating from OSU and Ashland University, Lori specialized in the areas of implementation and clinical consulting for EMR/EHR technologies. Lori has worked in multiple administrative functions in the healthcare community with experience in business development, operations, revenue enhancement, program development, physician recruitment, and managed care contracting. She has written articles involving the Electronic Health Record both locally and nationally.
Dan Faig, MBA, is the Physician Relationship Manager at Mount Carmel Health System. Prior to this position he was employed at Novartis Pharmaceuticals as the Senior Cardiovascular Metabolic Specialist and as an Executive Sales Consultant. Dan previously worked as an Acute Care Specialist at Dura Pharmaceuticals, an Area Sales Manager with Vendors Supply Inc., and a Territory Manager at Campbell Sales Company. Dan received his B.A. from Northern Kentucky University and his MBA from ODU. He has also served as the PYAA Lacrosse, Boys Youth Director and Coach.
Sterling Hedrick, MD, FACR, is President of the Columbus Arthritis Center, Director of Rheumatology for Mt. Carmel and Riverside Methodist Hospitals, as well as a practicing rheumatologist. Dr. Hedrick is a graduate of John Carroll University and OSU College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine training and a fellowship in rheumatology at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland. As a member of the Case faculty, Dr. Hedrick did immunology research and directed the Musculoskeletal Teaching program for medical students. He was appointed to the ODU Board of Trustees in 2011.
Eric Jenkins, MBA, works at OhioHealth as a Physician Practice Manager at the Doctors Hospital Family Practice in Grove City. Eric graduated from ODU as a student-athlete. He was a four-year varsity participant on the Men's Basketball team, and he belonged to the service organization, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated. Upon graduation, Eric worked as an Assistant Men's Basketball coach at ODU and as a Charter School Teacher. Eric then became an Enrollment Counselor at the University of Phoenix while he received his MBA. His past experience includes working as an Operational Manager at US Healthworks, and Wright Medical Technology. He currently resides in Columbus with his wife and two children.
Sulema F. Lewis, MBA, is the Program Manager in the Continuing Medical Education Department at OhioHealth. She received her graduate degree in Business Administration from ODU. Upon graduation, she completed a graduate concentration in Project and Health Services Management from Keller Graduate School of Management. Sulema’s previous experience includes being a Business Adjunct Professor at Central State University, over seven years experience within the healthcare industry, as well as being a small business owner. Sulema is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and an active member throughout the community.
Mary Mazik, MS, is the Director of Marketing at Hand and Microsurgery Associates. In this position, she has developed and executed a marketing plan to recruit patients, developed and executed a marketing budget, assisted in human resources hiring, interviewing and projecting need, launched new website, new logo and new brand as well as many other responsibilities. Mary’s previous experience includes OhioHealth where she worked in Physician Relations and Riverside Methodist Hospital where she was in Patient Relations in the Emergency Department. Mary received her B.A. from ODU and her M.S. from Franklin University.
Lynn Miller, MBA, started her own healthcare consulting company called New Directions Healthcare Consultants, LLC, in August of 2013, after retiring from Central Ohio Urology Group, Inc. While at this Group, she worked as the Chief Operating Officer and later as the Chief Executive Officer. In these roles she was responsible for creating the practice which was actually a merger of eight practices and 27 urologists. Prior to joining Central Ohio Urology Group, Lynn worked in practice management, as a financial analyst and managed risk for health maintenance organizations including capitation. Lynn earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, from OSU where she graduated summa cum laude. She also received her MBA from the Executive MBA program at OSU. Lynn lives in Westerville with her husband and their yellow Labrador retriever, Sammy. She has two adult children and three grandchildren.
Christine Toscano, MBA, received her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University, and recently received her MBA from Ohio Dominican University. She is currently the Executive Director of Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center and has well over 20 years of experience developing single-specialty physician organizations and medical practice management. Her areas of expertise include strategic planning, contract negotiations, talent acquisition, risk management, and regulatory compliance. She also volunteered as Director of the Amputee Golf Classic for 10 years. Christine lives in Galloway with her husband and their two children ages 10 and 12. She enjoys travelling and cycling Ohio’s bikeways with her family.
Sport Management Board of Advisors
Chad Schroeder is an Associate General Manager at IMG College, representing the OSU department of athletics’ multi-media rights. He is charged with maximizing sponsorship revenue, assisting with the management of radio and television broadcast assets and providing strategy and leadership for the nation’s largest collegiate property. Schroeder came to IMG College from the Columbus Crew, where he served as Vice President of Corporate Sales & Broadcasting. Prior to that, he spent several years in the OSU Department of Athletics. Schroeder is a 1997 and 1999 graduate of OSU. He and his wife, Stacy, reside in Dublin.
For the fourth year, the Accounting students at ODU competed on the national stage in the annual American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Accounting Competition.
In 2010, ODU finished third in this competition and in both 2011 and 2012, ODU had a team in the semi-finals. For the 2013 AICPA Accounting Competition, ODU entered two teams which were charged with guiding a client through crucial life decisions: “The Panther Planners” consisting of Kathary Carder (Captain), Rachel Collins, Kevin Hatrick, and Ntiri Nyarko and the “Black and Gold Brokers” consisting of Duncan Campbell (Captain), Davante McCoy, Danielle Misencik, and Austin Monnin.
The faculty advisor for both teams was Assistant Professor Bob Osborne. Osborne stated, “Our teams presented strong solutions to the case, but were not selected to move forward in the competition. We are proud of our students for participating in this competition, and look forward to the competition next year.”
ODU accounting students prepared 418 income tax returns for tax year 2014, and processed $355,754 in refunds during ODU’s eighth annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. ODU’s program offers the only fully bilingual VITA site in Central Ohio. This year, student participants included 18 traditional, eight ODU adult students, and eight students from Bishop Watterson High School. The high school students earned one college credit hour and accrued service learning hours for participating in the program. The program was offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays from February 22 through April 12.
“I’m extremely proud of our Accounting students and their dedicated, determined and selfless work,” said Bob Osborne, ODU assistant professor of Accounting and VITA program advisor. “This was a record-breaking year for our program. Our 34 volunteers was the largest VITA class in our program’s history; we prepared a record-high 418 tax returns; and a single student prepared 25 tax returns. More importantly, our students used their knowledge and skills to serve real people with real tax needs.”
VITA offers free tax help to people with low-to-moderate income (generally $51,000 and below). Through this program, ODU Accounting students offer assistance with special credits, including earned income tax credit, child tax credit and credit for the elderly. The Internal Revenue Service certifies participating accounting students (usually juniors or seniors) as tax preparers.
Under the supervision of faculty members who are certified public accountants, students prepare federal, state, local school and city income tax returns. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, the program offers free electronic filing. ODU faculty and students have helped prepare 2,133 tax returns since 2007.
On Monday April 7, 12 Columbus Public High School students made presentations at ODU as part of the Rotary Enterprise Academy. The students worked with the Columbus Rotary and ODU business professor, Dr. John Grant, to learn about the free enterprise system. In February, the students were on campus for classroom workshops and sessions on running a business.
In March, these students were hosted in teams by Columbus Rotarians and made visits to area businesses, studying their mission statements, organizational structure, marketing practices and other concepts discussed in the classroom sessions.
The presentations were followed by a meal in the President’s Dining Room and a program to award students with certificates of completion. Students who completed the program received one college credit from ODU.
Roxanne Beard, Ph.D. had an active summer of scholarship. In June, she made two presentations covering pedagogy and organizational behavior (see pictures below). The first presentation addressed the effectiveness of experiential group assignments when teaching decision making. The second presentation led participants through a novel set of exercises illustrating the use of geocaching activities to teach creative problem solving. The presentations were part of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Conference held in Asheville, NC.
In August, Dr. Beard led a professional development workshop (PDW) for researchers studying hidden, or hard-to-find, populations titled “Hidden in Plain Sight: Strategies for Studying Hard-To-Find or Invisible Populations.” Scholars from 13 countries attended this first of a kind workshop held during the Academy of Management conference in Orlando, FL. And finally, in October, while attending the Midwest Academy of Management conference in Milwaukee, WI, Dr. Beard presented an empirical study titled Understanding Gay and Lesbian Leadership Styles: An Exploratory Study.
Brad Bradford, Adjunct Professor, had two letters to the editor published in different newspapers. “Humanities are the search for higher purpose,” was in the July 17 edition of The Columbus Dispatch and “Weighing Quality of Life” was in the July 23 edition of The New York Times.
Maggie Gilmore, CPA, MT, co-presented “Advanced Fundamentals of Accounting for Income Taxes: Focus on Uncertain Tax Benefits, Valuation Allowances, Indefinite Reversal and Disclosures” with international accounting firm Deloitte Tax LLP at the Dec. 17, 2013, meeting of the Columbus Association of Tax Professionals.
Professor Gilmore was also featured in the January and February edition of the CPA Voice, which is published by the Ohio Society of CPAs. The article “Accounting Leader and... Abu Khan, Ph.D., and his wife, Tanzila Sarwar have been blessed with the birth of their second child. Zaydaan Ibrahim Khan was born on Wednesday, March 26 and weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces. He joins his parents and big brother Wildan Yusuf Khan.
Dr. Khan also presented "Efficiency, Value Addition and Performance in US Bank Mergers" at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Financial Management Association International (FMA) held in Chicago, Illinois in October.
Natalie Kompa, Program Coordinator for ODU’s PR & Marketing Communications program, presented on March 20 in partnership with Janet Doyle, a Senior Recruiter with Atrium Tech Solutions, a leading search firm. Kompa and Doyle addressed a group of ODU’s graduate students, including MBA, Physician Assistant and Sport Management students and discussed ”Using Social Media in Your Job Search.”
Anna Parkman, Ph.D., gave a peer reviewed presentation titled “Using Too Big to Fail in Teaching Business & Society”, at the annual Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) International Conference held in Salt Lake City in June 2013.
Jim Strode, Ph. D., was co-author of a symposium at the North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM) conference in Austin, Texas in May 2013. The title of the Symposium was “The External Review Process from Start to Finish…And To Revision?” He presented it in conjunction with Cuneen, J., Pastore, D., Baker, R., Gray, D., Lawrence, H., Gillentine, A., and Baker, P. Jim, and the same colleagues, also had a peer-reviewed conference symposium accepted for presentation at this year’s NASSM conference scheduled for May in Pittsburgh. The title of the presentation is “Sport Management Program Advisory Boards: The Advantages of Outside Influence”.
Dr. Strode, along with Professor Gilmore and P. Milton, had a paper accepted to “Applied Research in Coaching and Athletics Annual.” The paper is titled, “Sponsorship of Intercollegiate Athletics and a Unique Approach to Reducing and Eliminating Culpability for Unrelated Business Income Tax.”
Dr. Strode was named to the editorial board for the Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics. Additionally, he served as a guest panelist on April 14 at the Department of Recreational Sports at OSU for graduate and undergraduate students who are seeking career advice in sport.
John Grant, Ph.D., and Jay Young, Ph.D., attended the 50th annual International MBAA conference in Chicago, held from March 26 – March 29 at the Palmer House. In addition to making presentations, they also served as paper discussants and session chairs.
Dr. Grant served as the President of the North American Management Society (NAMS) this year and Dr. Young was elected to serve as the program chair for the conference next year which will be held in Chicago in late March.
Dr. Grant discussed “Leadership Legacies” a business heritage for student role models. Dr. Young presented work in creating a new MBA entry course titled “Management Skills Portfolio: Launching a Prepared MBA Class.”
