A Symposium: The Role of Mary in the Church

Keynote Speaker: The Most Rev. Frederick F. Campbell

The symposium will engage a variety of theologians, and historians including the Most Rev. James A. Griffin, Interim President of Ohio Dominican University, Fr. Bertrand A. Buby, Director of the International Research Institute of the University of Dayton, Sr. Thoma Swanson, OP, artist, scholar and former Peruvian missionary and Sr. M. Jean Frisk of the University of Dayton, who will address topics including:

• Mary in the Scriptures
• Mary in the Visual Arts
• Our Lady of Guadalupe
• Reading Magisterial Documents about Mary

Registsration fee is $30 payable to the Center for Dominican Studies. Group rates of $150 for 10 is available. Contact the Center for more information.

A Concert: Preaching for Justice Through Music

Featuring: Fr. Jim Marchionda, OP and John Angotti

Fr. Marchionda is a Dominican priest, preacher, composer, conductor, singer and woodwind instrumentalist. He has composed over 200 sacred music compositions and his ministry successfully combines the Dominican charism of preaching with a professional career in sacred music. John Angotti brings his musical talents as a published composer for World Library Publications.

Aquinas Convocation

Due to extenuating circumstances, Father Stephen Boguslawski, O.P., who was scheduled to deliver the keynote address at Ohio Dominican University’s Annual Convocation in honor of St. Thomas of Aquinas on Thursday, January 24, 2008, has cancelled his appearance.

Rather than beginning the program at 10:30 a.m. as was originally scheduled, a St. Thomas Aquinas Celebration will take place, beginning with Mass at noon in Christ the King Chapel in Sansbury Hall on the University’s main campus. Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend James A. Griffin, Interim President of Ohio Dominican University. Mass will be followed by a luncheon in the Colonial Room.

Fr. Boguslawski is a Dominican friar of the Eastern Province of the Order of Preachers. He has served as Rector/President of Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, Michigan, Vice President and Academic Dean of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington D.C. He currently serves as Director of the John Paul Cultural Center in Washington D.C.

Thomas Merton: The Hermit of New York

Still Point’s full time mission is to portray modern spiritual heroes. The Hermit in New York, wrought from the journals of Thomas Merton, is the story of a contemporary man of faith practicing the fourth century tradition of eremitism, while a participant in the crowded, modern world. Reservations are required for this performance. An in-kind donation will be asked for at the door.

Featuring: Eileen Gannon, OP

Dominican Sister Eileen Gannon is the United Nations Representative of the Dominican Order in the United States. Sr. Eileen is also a member of the Sparkhill New York Dominican Congregation. Through her work in the UN, she represents the Dominican family whose members live and work in more than 100 countries throughout the world. She is also an educator, having taught at all levels of education as well as in educational administration and service learning.

What Does It Mean to be Human? Reflections on the Christian Response to Homelessness

Anthony Gittins is an author and Professor of Catholic Missiology at Catholic Theological Union. His research focuses on the dynamics of interculuration by using anthropological and theological lenses. His pastoral outreach includes Chicago’s disenfranchised and cultures from African to the Pacific. This event includes a book signing.

Speaking with Authority: Catherine of Siena and the Voices of Women Today

Featuring: Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP, PhD

Dominican Sister Catherine Hilkert, OP is a prolific author and professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Mary Catherine specializes in contemporary systematic theology with particular interest in theological anthropology. She is immediate past President of the Catholic Theological Society of America.

During these small group luncheons, time is provided to reflect on how the Dominican charism can help us achieve a greater sense of call in our work, wherever we may serve.

Celtic Spirituality

Featuring: Fr. Stephen Fitzhenry, O.P. STL.

Fr. Fitzhenry started his work as a missionary in the Diocese of Multan, Pakistan, in 1960 and became the Vicar Provincial there from 1972-1980. Currently, he is chaplain for the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs. Fr. Fitzhenry has published widely for a variety of journals including Spiritual Life.
