The Bell Tolls for Ohio Dominican

August 7, 2003

New Carillon Systems Makes The Erskine Tower Ring

COLUMBUS, OH - At the conclusion of Ohio Dominican University's Spring Commencement, the graduating Class of 2003 walked out of Alumni Hall with their diplomas, while listening to bells tolling for the first time in Ohio Dominican's history.

On that day, a new Carillon system made its debut, ringing in the tower of Erskine Hall. The Carillon is a gift from the Class of 2003, who worked to raise funds to help pay for the bells. Erskine Hall was constructed in 1930; it is the focal point of Ohio Dominican's main campus on Sunbury Road, and its tower is a campus landmark. The bells enhance the beauty of Erskine, and can be heard by the surrounding community.

"As a result of this class gift, future generations of students at Ohio Dominican will hear and enjoy the sounds of bells ringing on the hour and the half hour…a memento from the students who came before them," said Ohio Dominican President Jack Calareso, who presented the Carillon system to graduates as a surprise, before they left with diplomas in hand.
