ODU Receives Foundation Support

July 21, 2003

COLUMBUS, OH -- To help meet the needs of the Ohio Dominican University's growth and new programs and initiatives, Ohio Dominican has stepped up its fundraising efforts. The University recently secured grants from four foundations to provide scholarships and other needed funding to ensure a quality education for ODU students.

Hearst Foundation Grant to Fund Minority Scholarships
The William Randolph Hearst Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to Ohio Dominican University, to be used for the Ohio Dominican William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund was created in 1997 with an initial $100,000 gift from the Hearst Foundation, and awards scholarships to students of color.

Nationwide Donation Supports Classroom Technology
Ohio Dominican received a $30,000 grant from the Nationwide Foundation, which will support the University's efforts to increase technology in the classroom to transform teaching and learning. The Nationwide grant will be used to purchase SMART Board™ Interactive White Boards and projectors for classrooms. Since 1987, Nationwide's generosity has resulted in more than $1 million worth of funding for Ohio Dominican programs.

Columbus Foundation and Women's Fund of Central Ohio Support Village to Child Project
A new project from Ohio Dominican University's Village to Child program recently received two grants totaling $60,000. Village to Child is a year-round program designed to raise the academic achievement of 150 middle and high school students who live in the neighborhoods that surround ODU's main campus on Sunbury Road. ODU students are recruited each year to serve as mentors and tutors for the program.

The Columbus Foundation donated $50,000 and the Women's Fund of Central Ohio donated $10,000 to Village to Child's Young Women's Urban Philanthropy Project. This project helps teach young women from surrounding schools the value and importance of philanthropy by providing hands-on experience with the funding process.

The young women involved in the program chose funding priorities, developed a request for proposal (RFP) and an application, and distributed an RFP to 30 local nonprofit organizations. Part of the funds received from the Village to Child grants will be used to provide small grants to some of these organizations. The young women will make site visits, choose the organizations to receive funding, and monitor all progress made.
