ODU Commemorates September 11th

Ohio Dominican University to Commemorate September 11th with Town Meeting and Interfaith Prayer Service

September 8, 2003

Ohio Dominican students, faculty and staff will gather together on the university's main campus on Thursday, September 11 to commemorate the two-year anniversary of 9/11.

"Living for the Common Good" is the year-long theme that Ohio Dominican has adopted to broaden awareness of the difference one individual can make in the lives of others. It is also the backdrop for a series of activities the university has planned for the morning of September 11.

ODU President Jack Calareso announced the theme at a university convocation earlier this week. "In this environment of teaching and learning, the insular world of our classes and co-curricular activities, it is easy to lose sight of the larger community and our place and responsibility in the larger world," he said.

"We are responsible for the common good…the common good of people in this neighborhood, the people of Columbus and throughout Ohio, the people in every state of this country…Muslims and Jews…Catholics and Protestants…people of all faiths and lifestyles. I encourage us to make our mission a reality in our classrooms and across our campus; in our lives of service and citizenship, today and everyday. Let us be people of action, using our education for the common good," President Calareso added.

The following events are planned on Ohio Dominican's main campus, on September 11:

--8:15 a.m. Brief Service, followed by bells ringing from the tower of Erskine Hall

--11:00 a.m. Town Meeting in Christ the King Chapel on the meaning of "Living for the Common Good." Panelists will include ODU freshman Michael Lafferty; Anne Crimmings, professor of psychology; Dave Archibald, vice president of enrollment management and marketing; and Ruben Minor, an adult student enrolled in Ohio Dominican's LEAD program. The panel will be moderated by ODU Executive Vice President Richard Farmer.

--11:50 a.m. Interfaith Prayer Service in Christ the King Chapel

--Noon Mass in Christ the King Chapel

The public is welcome to attend any and all events.

Under the umbrella theme, "Living for the Common Good," Ohio Dominican will sponsor a year-long series of activities to reach out to those in the community needing help. ODU students will be encouraged to engage in community service activity with area non-profits. "Our intention is for students to see that they can make a difference in the lives of others. Hopefully, the experiences they have here at ODU will instill in them the value of community service, which they will bring with them, as they enter into the next phase of their life," President Calareso said
