Ohio Dominican Village to Child Program Awarded Franklin County JAFS Grant

November 30, 2004

COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio Dominican University's signature Village to Child program recently received a grant award of $128,526 from the Franklin County Job and Family Services Creative and Innovative Youth Grant Program. Signed by Franklin County commissioners, the grant will afford Village to Child the ability to serve more middle school students who live in the University's zip code area.

"When the need for services is so great, it is incumbent on all providers to seek diverse funding sources," said Village to Child's Director Tei Street. "This grant will enable Ohio Dominican University's Village to Child to continue its work of serving children in the 43219 zip code area, to aid in increasing their graduation rate."

Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services (JAFS) is a county, state and federally supported agency responsible for basic financial, medical and social service programs. JAFS provides career development opportunities and support services for the community-at-large.

Ohio Dominican University is located at 1216 Sunbury Road on Columbus' near east side. Ten years ago, ODU "adopted" its neighborhood - the 43219 zip code - in order to make a difference in the lives of young people and their families, by providing mentoring and tutoring opportunities. These programs provide unique opportunities for ODU students to get involved in the community as well as help the children in the area.

ODU's Village to Child year-round program is designed to raise the academic achievement of 150 middle and high school students who live in the neighborhoods which surround the college campus. During the summer, Village to Child invites students to the campus to participate in week-long programs focused on science, reading, math, the arts, and technology. During the school year, Village to Child students come to the Ohio Dominican campus one to three days per week to receive tutoring, mentoring, and cultural enrichment. ODU students are recruited in the fall to serve as mentors and tutors to the students.
