ODU's Center for Dominican Studies Publishes Scholarly Journal
August 5 , 2007

COLUMBUS, OH -- A scholarly journal entitled Dominican Studies has been published by The Center for Dominican Studies at Ohio Dominican University.
The launching of this project coincides with the 800th Anniversary celebration of the founding of the first Dominican monastery in Prouilhe, France by Saint Dominic. The Center for Dominican Studies joins this celebration in a unique way by opening possibilities for shared study on issues of importance to the church, culture and society through the publication of manuscripts that reflect a body of contemporary wisdom in the Catholic and Dominican traditions.
Featured in this first edition are three commissioned articles written by Dominican scholars Richard Schenk, O.P., Dr. Theol , Carol Dempsey, O.P., Ph.D., and Thomas O’Meara, O.P., Ph. D.
In his article Creative Fidelity: Remembrance and Forgetting, Renewal and Accommodation on the 800th Anniversary of the Foundation of Prouille, Fr. Richard Schenk provides the reader with an historical, challenging and inspirational view of the rich heritage and call to fidelity bequeathed to the Order by Dominic de Guzman.
Sr. Carol Dempsey’s article, Isaiah: God’s Poet of Light reminds us of the richness and relevance of Isaiah’s message for the contemporary preacher who is challenged to both listen to the Word and act upon it with intelligence and passion for the truth
Fr. Thomas O’Meara’s article, Power and Display in the Church: Yves Congar’s Critique takes a critical look at Yves Congar’s 1963 text, Pour une Eglise servante et pauvre (Power and Poverty in the Church). In Fr. O’Meara’s words, “To read Congar today is to be struck by his passion for the future.”
“We are grateful for the scholarly works included in this initial journal. It is our hope, that in keeping with the Dominican tradition of sharing the fruits of one’s study and contemplation, this issue will be another valuable venue for sharing ‘the holy preaching.’” said Sr. Catherine Colby, O.P., Ed.D., Director of the Center for Dominican Studies.
