New Faculty Join Ohio Dominican University

COLUMBUS, OH—Ohio Dominican University is pleased to welcome the following new faculty members:

Division of Education

Ted A. Zigler, Ph.D joins ODU as an assistant professor of education. Zigler has over 30 years of service in public education as a principal, assistant superintendent, teacher, coach and athletic director in five Ohio school districts. He most recently served as an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati, but has also taught at Ashland University and the College of Mount St. Joseph. He received a bachelor’s degree in Comprehensive Science Education from the University of Toledo; an M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling the University of Toledo; and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Cincinnati. He was awarded Ohio’s Principal of the Year in 2001 from the OASSA. He is a co-chair of the 2007 Mid-Western Educational Research Association Program Committee and the 2007-2008 president of the Ohio Council of Professors of Educational Administration. He is a resident of Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Daniel L. Brilhart joins Ohio Dominican as a visiting instructor of Education. He has been an adjunct professor at Ohio Dominican, Antioch University and Otterbein College and supervisor of the Education Department at Capital University. He received a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Goshen College (IN); a master’s degree in Peace Studies from the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (IN); and an M.Ed. in Educational Theory and Practice from The Ohio State University, where is currently a Ph.D. candidate. Brilhart is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Educational Research Association, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Society for Experiential Education and the Ohio Association of Teacher Educators. He resides in Columbus.

Martha Gallagher Michael, Ph.D. joins the university as visiting associate professor of Education.  Dr. Michael previously served as an assistant professor and director of Special Education programs and chair of the Special Education Department at Ursuline College and has held teaching positions at Ursuline and Lorain Community College. She received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Capital University; a master’s degree in Art Education and Ph.D in Special Education, both from The Ohio State University. She is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, the Northwest Ohio Infant Mental Health Chapter, Teachers in Higher Education and the Firelands Association for Visual Artists. Michael resides in Oberlin.

Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Stephen R. Thomas, Ph.D. joins ODU as associate professor of Political Science. He has been teaching as an adjunct professor at Ohio Dominican and as a lecturer at The Ohio State University. Dr. Thomas received an A.B. in Government from Oberlin College, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University. He is a resident of Columbus.

Division of Math, Computer and Natural Sciences

Shannon Markiewicz, Ph.D. joins ODU as an instructor of Mathematics. She most recently served as teaching assistant in the Statistics Department at The Ohio State University. She received a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from The University of Maine at Orono; a master’s degree in Mathematics and a master’s of Applied Statistics both from The Ohio University; and is a Ph.D. candidate at The Ohio State University. Markiewicz resides in Columbus.

Vicki A. Motz, Ph.D, joins the university as a visiting assistant professor of Biology. Prior to Ohio Dominican, Motz was an adjunct instructor at the New Hampshire Technical Institute and has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Northern Essex Community College and Saint Anselm College. She received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Zoology from Rutgers University; and her Ph.D. in Biology from Boston University. Motz resides in Marysville, OH.

Division of Theology, Arts and Ideas

Jessica W. Larva, joins ODU as an assistant professor of Art after serving as an adjunct instructor at the university. Prior to Ohio Dominican, Larva lectured at The Ohio State University and instructed Summer Camp programs for the Wexner Center. She received both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Fine Arts from The Ohio State University. She has had her works exhibited at the Hopkins Gallery at OSU, the Wexner Center for the Arts, and the Jacob Jarvis Center in New York. Larva resides in Columbus.
