Sister Thomas Albert Corbett, OP

On Wednesday, August 1, 2007, Sr. Thomas Albert Corbett died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Columbus, OH, on February 9, 1914, to John and Elizabeth (Sweeney) Corbett. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1939 and made her Profession of Vows in 1941. Sister served as a General Councilor and Secretary General for the Congregation (1982-90), and was Academic Dean at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT (1956-62).
Sr. Thomas Albert earned a BA from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University), an MA from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. She taught at St. Mary of the Springs College/Ohio Dominican College (1941-44, 1949-52); The Catholic University of America (1952-53); and Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, CT (1953-56). At Ohio Dominican, she chaired the Political Sciences Department (1962-83) and served as Director of Institutional Research (1982-84); Academic Advisor (1991-2000), and Director of the Honors Program (1991-2000). Always concerned with justice matters, Sister served on Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese of Columbus for many years. After her retirement, she volunteered in community service at the Motherhouse before coming to Mohun Health Care Center in 2001.
Sr. Thomas Albert was preceded in death by a brother, John. She is survived by sister-in-law Margaret Corbett (John’s wife); nephew Father John Dominic Corbett of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC; nieces Marjorie Sullivan (Michael) of Columbus, Mary Jane King (Charlie) of California, Katie Cyr (Jean Pierre) of Columbus, and Aileen Compernolle (Bob) of Chicago; and by many grand nieces and nephews.
The viewing will be in the Motherhouse on Friday, August 1, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day, with wake continuing until 6:30 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
