Social Work Program Mission Statement

A primary goal of the Ohio Dominican University Social Work program concerns the preparation of students for competent entry-level professional practice at the baccalaureate degree level. Building on and integrated with a liberal arts base, the curriculum of the Ohio Dominican Social Work major encompasses both art and science in the creative integration of professional values, foundation knowledge and skills needed to work across a range of settings and with varied client populations and life challenges. Paralleling the emphasis within the University’s mission upon service, students enrolled in this major are preparing to be of help to people in coping with environmental demands, strengthening their social relationships and enriching their ways of living. Within the major, students are assisted to tolerate and deal in a “truthful” manner with ambiguity, including the role and moral ambiguity which they will inevitably encounter as Social Work practitioners. The program’s bias toward the historical roots of Social Work with its concern for effecting social and economic justice with and on behalf of vulnerable groups of people is highly compatible with the Dominican teaching of the social gospel. The Social Work curriculum mirrors the ideals of the University in the strong emphasis placed upon knowledge and sensitivity concerning global diversity.
