A Note from the Chair to Our New Students

Business Division Chair, Dr. Jay YoungWelcome to the Ohio Dominican University campus for the 2007-2008 academic year. If you are new to Ohio Dominican, you will observe that the face of our campus is changing. These changes include both large-scale building projects, such as the new student center and a new residence hall, as well as many important new developments in our curriculum and co-curricular activities

This is a great time to be in the Division of Business. This fall, virtually all of our academic programs have been revamped. They have been aligned with the realities of a rapidly changing global economy and yet remain in sync with the timeless values of our rich Catholic and Dominican tradition. We are also celebrating our “Candidacy” status with the ACBSP, a national business program accrediting agency. This partnership will ensure that ODU’s business programs will remain among the best offerings in Central Ohio and continue on a course of continuous improvement. Outside the classroom we encourage you to explore a multitude of campus leadership opportunities including our professional business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, and our new honorary fraternity, Tau Pi Phi. Finally, in keeping with our commitment to the value of international experience, we will be offering a study abroad opportunity in the European Union in May 2008.

Read on to learn more about the vibrant and rapidly developing environment that you are joining at ODU. Welcome aboard! Write to me at youngj2@ohiodominican.edu.

Division of Business Receives ACBSP Candidacy Status

ACBSP Logo As a part of the strategic planning process in the Division of Business last fall, the faculty reviewed and researched accreditation for business programs in higher education. While our Business programs have been accredited through the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Educators (IACBE), the new strategic plan challenged all to consider changing our accrediting body to better reflect our growth and vision. In January of 2007, the Division of Business Faculty applied for accreditation through The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

This spring, Ohio Dominican was accepted with candidacy status into the ACBSP. We are now completing the initial program and it is our hope to be accepted into the self-study process for the upcoming academic year.

ACBSP is the leading specialized accreditation association for business programs focused on teaching excellence. Founded in 1988, ACBSP membership includes 403 educational institutions, 297 of which have successfully achieved accreditation. ACBSP is focused on what occurs in the classroom while encouraging scholarly research and is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

VITA Program Serves the Community

VITA Group
Accounting students learned firsthand about the value of community service in our spring 2007 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance ( VITA) program. Twelve students were certified by the Internal Revenue Service to be IRS VITA tax preparers. Under faculty supervision, the students prepared federal, state, local school and city income tax returns for individuals of low- to moderate-income, individuals with disabilities, and the elderly within our community.  ODU accounting majors prepared 139 tax returns for the community during the tax season.  The quality of the VITA program is measured by IRS visits to VITA sites, error rates on prepared tax returns and client surveys.  Results of the IRS visits to the ODU VITA site were “excellent” and ODU students had no unresolved errors for the tax returns prepared. So successful was this year’s effort that several organizations want to use the ODU VITA program as a model for other colleges and universities in the area.

The program is an extension of Ohio Dominican’s longstanding tradition of service to those in need in the surrounding community.  For additional information on the VITA program, please contact Robert Osborne, Assistant Professor of Accounting at 251-4261.

Congratulations to the ODU VITA Program for a job well done!

Sport Management Partners with Columbus Clippers for ODU Game Day

ODU Student Alan Rill & the ODU PantherThe Columbus Clippers provided hands-on learning opportunities for Ohio Dominican Sport Management students this past spring, through two courses: SPM 498 Seminar in Sport Management and SPM 220 Sport Marketing. For several weeks, the sport management students coordinated game day activities and developed marketing strategies for the Clippers. The general manager and two full-time staff members worked with the students on an ongoing basis. On game day, students shadowed various members of the Clippers’ management team, helping with press box management, on-field management, mascot management, and marketing management. They organized the singing of the National Anthem by the Ohio Dominican choir and the first pitch by Sport Management Coordinator Dr. Lisa Miller. The partnership will continue into the 2007-2008 academic year.

2007 Edgar Ingram, Jr. Innovation Award Winner Announced

Edgar Ingram Award Winner
From l to r: Jamie Richardson, Jason Johnson, John Kelley and ODU Interim President, Bishop James A. Griffin

Jason Johnson, a LEAD MBA program student at Ohio Dominican, won the second annual Edgar Ingram, Jr. Innovation Award for presentation of a business plan for his new business, the Johnson Real Estate Investment Group. Jason has received the Ingram Award prize of $2,500 toward capitalization of his new company and had an opportunitiy to compete for a $10,000 award from the Kiwanis Club.

The Edgar Ingram Jr. Innovation award is funded by Ingram family members and ODU Alumni John Kelley and Jamie Richardson.

The Kiwanis Club of Columbus inaugurated its “New Business Builders MBA Competition” in 2006 to encourage MBA student entrepreneurs to develop business plans for new enterprises. Through this program, students from three Columbus-area universities submitted business plans for judging for the $10,000 award. Five MBA students from the Ohio Dominican LEAD program participated in a special section of BUS 690 to develop their business plans. We are very proud of Jason’s plan and the tremendous effort put forth by all five of our students in the development and presentation of their business plans.

The ODU special Kiwanis Section of BUS 690 is not a traditional MBA course. The instructor, Gene Johnson, is a coach, not a lecturer; there are few weekly assignments; no exams; and no traditional textbooks. Classmates meet with entrepreneurial experts during the term and their business plans are reviewed by a select team of entrepreneurial business managers. There is only one assignment – the student’s comprehensive business plan for his/her new business entity.

Again, congratulations to Jason Johnson, this year’s winner. We are looking forward to a new group of budding entrepreneurs to capitalize on this opportunity in early 2008.

Dr. Anna Parkman Receives Conley Award

Dr. Anna Parkman Dr. Anna Parkman, Associate Professor of Management, was awarded the Conley Award for Outstanding Teaching this spring at the annual ODU Awards Ceremony. The Conley Award winner is selected by an ODU student vote and is bestowed upon one ODU faculty member each year.

Dr. Parkman began teaching management courses at ODU in the fall of 2005 after having served for a number of years as a faculty member and Chair of Graduate Business Programs at the University of Charleston. She focuses her classroom efforts on engaging students through the heavy use of active learning strategies including case analysis, exercises, team projects, and the use of films.

According to Dr. Parkman, “In the 20 years I have been teaching at the college level, I have always said it is the time spent with the students that I enjoy the most. The time in the classroom is precious to me in that it is, on any given work day, the best part of the day.”

Congratulations Dr. Parkman!

Division of Business to Offer MBA with a Concentration in Public Administration

The Division of Business will offer a new MBA with a concentration in Public Administration (MBA-PA) to prepare students for leadership roles in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

The study of public administration involves an appreciation of the tension between political values and administrative values (ethics, bureaucratic efficiency, and the political environment) and the way in which the process of policy implementation affects the nature of these values.  Managers possessing a range of skills in public administration are needed to meet the challenges in government management at the federal, state and local levels.

Additional information on the MBA-PA can be found in the 2007-2008 Graduate Catalog or by contacting Robert Osborne, Assistant Professor of Accounting at 251-4261.
