Mathematics Department

Mathematics has been called the "science of patterns." The study of mathematics at Ohio Dominican University involves discovering patterns and applying the knowledge gained in these investigations to other problems. This study goes beyond providing students with the basic mathematical skills and knowledge. In the liberal arts tradition, students are challenged in a variety of disciplines to aid in their development as independent and thoughtful individuals.
The mathematics faculty at Ohio Dominican is committed to quality undergraduate teaching, calling students to a deeper understanding of mathematical ideas while at the same time providing individualized assistance in meeting obstacles. In addition, the faculty continually search for methods to improve students' understanding of mathematics, including the effective use of instructional technology.
Ohio Dominican offers programs leading to a major in mathematics, a minor in mathematics, as well as teaching certification in mathematics (grades 7-12). The requirements for each of these programs are designed to provide students with a strong mathematical background, including mathematics courses emphasizing both applied and abstract perspectives. The programs are designed to provide students with the background to pursue a wide variety of mathematical careers.
The solids illustrated above are called the five Platonic solids. All the sides of a given solid are identical regular polygons, that this, all squares, all equilateral triangles, etc. Further, the number of edges that meet at each vertex of a given solid are equal, that is, always three edges, always four edges, etc. These are the only five solids that have both these properties. To discover other patterns and mathematical truths, join the mathematics faculty and students at Ohio Dominican in "contemplating truth and sharing the fruits of those contemplations with others."
