At ODU, licensed teachers can earn an endorsement in a variety of subjects. You can also add an endorsement while earning your Master of Education degree.
Our programs are offered online, on campus or in blended formats so you can choose what works best for your schedule.

Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement

  • Program Features & Outcomes

    The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement may be added only to an Early Childhood License.

    Program Features
    • Classes are entirely online.
    • Total of three courses, which can be taken in any order.
    • Can be completed two months.
    • Tuition locked in for duration of program.
    • Qualifies you to teach the 4th and 5th grades.
    • May be combined with ODU's Master of Education in Curriculum & Intruction
    • May be used to renew your license.
    Outcomes
    • The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement enables Early Childhood (PreK-Grade 3) license holders to meet additional requirements that would broaden the scope of their license so they could also teach the fourth and fifth grades.

  • Course Requirements & Descriptions
    The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement consists of 9 credit hours.

    EDU 566 Teaching Mathematics & Science in the Intermediate Grades  3
    EDU 567 Teaching Language Arts & Social Studies for Intermediate Grades  3
    EDU 568 Teaching & Learning in the Intermediate Grades   3
    Total  9
    The EDU 566, 567, and 568 courses may be used as electives in the M.Ed. program.

    Note: An additional Praxis II/Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) examination is required. See the Ohio Department of Education website for the test number.

Reading Endorsement

  • Program Features & Outcomes

    The Reading Endorsement, completed at the graduate level, may be added to any standard teaching license such as Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Intervention Specialist, Adolescence to Young Adult (AYA), or Multi-Age licenses. 

    Program Features
    • Classes are entirely online.
    • Total of five courses offered in eight-week sessions.
    • Can be completed in one year.
    • Transfer credit may be accepted.
    • May be combined with ODU's Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction.
    • May be used to renew your teaching license.
    Outcomes
    • Fulfills requirements for the Graduate Reading Endorsement (P-12). The courses are aligned to meet the International Reading Association (IRA) standards and guidelines set forth by the Ohio Board of Regents.
    • Prepares teaching for the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) exam.

    Taken at the undergraduate level for students who have not already completed the requirement during their initial licensure coursework.

Teacher Leader Endorsement

  • Program Features & Outcomes
    The Teacher Leader Endorsement can be added to a professional teaching license.

    Note: You must have master's degree before start of program.

    Program Features

    • Classes offered online and on campus.
    • On campus classes meet once a week, 5 - 8 p.m., in eight-week sessions.
    • Can be completed in two semesters.
    • Tuition locked in for duration of program.
    • Transfer credit may be accepted.
    • May be used to pursue Lead License.
    • May be used to renew your teaching license.
    Outcomes
    • Fulfills a need in Ohio to prepare individuals to serve as teacher leaders, both in formal and informal roles within their building and district. 
    • Teacher leaders assist principals in developing and supporting a shared vision and clear goals for schools and provide staff development, mentoring, and coaching to teachers.
    • The Teacher Leader Endorsement is also a route to the top license on the career lattice, the Lead Professional Educator License.

TESOL Endorsement

  • Program Outcome
    • By completing additional coursework and passing the Praxis II/Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) ESOL test, candidates will qualify for the TESOL Multi-Age Endorsement while earning the Master of Education degree.

Intervention Specialist Licensure

ODU's Intervention Specialist Licensure is designed for currently licensed teachers who want to add the Intervention Specialist license to their teaching credentials.
