FINANCIAL AID

It is never too early to begin thinking about college. From location to major offerings, there are many factors to consider. One of the largest factors a family considers when looking at college options is cost. With college fees rising each year many students and parents will be researching their financial aid options. This newsletter is a guide to some of the financial aid resources and options available to college students and their families.

What is financial aid?

College financial aid is comprised of the following:

  • Scholarships and awards (gift aid based on merit)
  • Grants (gift aid based on need)
  • Loans (borrowed funds that must be re-paid)
  • Work-study (funds earned working on campus)
  • Monies from these sources can come from the federal and state governments as well as the college or university.

How is financial aid determined?

How much financial aid a student receives is determined by the results of their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is a document filed by a student and their family each year after January 1 and reports on previous year’s family financial information. All of this information is calculated to determine a student’s EFC (Estimated Family Contribution). The EFC is the amount the federal government determines a family can contribute towards a student’s college education. The EFC is then sent to the colleges and universities of the student’s choice and from there a financial aid package is put together.

Scholarships

Many students search for private scholarships to help fund their college education. There are several places one can begin a scholarship search including their high school guidance office, parents place of employment, college or university web sites, the local library and local community and civic organizations. The internet is another top source of scholarship information. Search engines can help students find scholarships based on several different criteria. Some of the most popular free scholarship search engines include:

Resources for Parents and Students

There are several online resources available to families of college bound students concerning paying for college and financial aid. Many of them also provide useful information for the college search in general. Some of the best sites are:

www.Knowhow2go.org: This website provides information for students in middle and high school. It is packed full of resources for financial aid, career options and much more.

www.Savingforcollege.com: Parents and families will find this website to be a plethora of information about paying for college costs and saving for tuition and other fees.

www.Mapping-your-future.org: Full of lists and web links this site provides timelines for planning for the college search and college costs.

Resources for college financial aid can be found everywhere. Often times the best place to begin looking is with the admissions office. Admission counselors are trained to assist families with all aspects of the college search process, including financial aid.
