Why did I transfer? I'd always known I wanted to be a teacher. And I'd heard such great things about ODU's Education program from several ODU Alumni. But when I graduated high school my brother was already attending Bowling Green and my parents thought it would be better for me to 'go away to school' in order to experience all that college life has to offer. So off I went. I struggled that entire first year; I really did not like the huge classes, I had to park on the complete opposite side of campus from my dorm, and I really didn't like being so far away from home. So I decided that I needed to do what was right for me. So I transferred in to ODU.
On my way to my appointment with my ODU Admission counselor, I got lost! I called my counselor and told her I was lost and would be running late. To my surprise, the counselor asked me to hold on the line so she could find out where I was. After consulting an online map, the counselor asked me to wait where I was - she would come find me! And she did! She got in her car, drove to where I was and had me follow her back to ODU for our appointment.
From the first time I set foot on campus, I knew ODU was right for me. After being here for 3 years now (and will graduate on time - as if I never transferred) I can say I made the right choice. With classes being much smaller, professors are much easier to approach because you know them - they teach the classes; not Teaching Assistants. I live off-campus now and work and go to school full time; with all of that going on in my life, I find that with classes being smaller, you also get to know your fellow classmates and make a lot of friends.
If you are looking for a university where it's easy to get involved, where you feel connected to the campus, your professors and classmates, then ODU is the place for you. It was certainly the right choice for me.
