From Your Alumni Office

Happy Valentine's Day! As we think of those who touch our hearts, we can’t help but think of you. Thank you for your loyalty and devotion to your alma mater. Thank you for sharing your memories and for joining us in all the times and ways you do to support our students now and those yet to be part of the ODU family. May your hearts be happy!

This continues to be an exciting time on campus! The Presidential Search Committee has worked diligently to narrow the field of highly qualified candidates down to three finalists. Those individuals will be on campus at the end of this month for interviews with students, faculty, and alumni. Their names are expected to be announced shortly, so be sure to check the Presidential Search webpage for the latest information.

A new ad hoc Sustainability Council has been formed by a group of faculty, staff and students who are working on the Greening of ODU. Chad King, professor of biology and Environmental Science, is the chair. Two activities may be of interest. First, the President’s Office is now serving Fair Trade coffee instead of Free Trade coffee at least one day a week. We hope this will grow to every day. Social Justice major Chris Albanese was key to this effort. Second, the Maintenance and Grounds Department is now (or will be when the weather breaks) composting all of the ODU grass clippings etc. to use again on campus rather than sending them to the landfill.

If you have not yet, in the near future you will receive your ODU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION membership card in the mail. We hope that this will be a useful asset to you in the months and years ahead, as your benefits and services increase.

Lots of activities are coming up quickly for you to reunite with family and friends.  Space is limited for our Bunny Breakfast, so make sure to RSVP soon, and the same for our Spring Schmooze or Lose (April 10), as well as our annual Fick Literary Brunch (April 13) when we remember Monsignor Fick, and other members of the Ohio Dominican family at Mass, followed by a presentation by author/restaurant entrepreneur, Sue Doody, at the brunch following Mass. We love to see you on campus and hope you will join friends at one or more of these events.

We also are very pleased to invite alumni to join students and faculty on a special MAY TERM educational travel opportunity to Belize this Spring. Complete information appears further in this newsletter.

Alumni graduating in years ending in “3” or “8” through 1968 are invited to the June Reunion and later years to the September Reunion at Homecoming. If you’re in one of those classes and would like to e-mail or call friends about YOUR class (or Cohort!) party, let us know. It’s cold outside now but it will be June before we know it!

Please drop us a note to let us know what is new in your life, or how we can better serve you. Until then, may this Lenten season be a time of blessings and growth.

FANTASTIC EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY!
The International Office and Dr. Chad King are pleased to invite Ohio Dominican alumni to participate in a study abroad program to Belize this May to explore the biodiversity of and conservation efforts. The group will be traveling to Belize from May 17 - 26 and will spend seven days in the rainforest and three days near the mangroves and coral reefs. This will be a hands-on trip that will include visits to some of the Mayan ruins, meetings with local conservation experts, and a service project to give back to the local community. Alumni will be able to enroll as continuing education students in BIO285, a two-credit course.

Approximate cost for this trip: $2,700, plus $880 tuition for those seeing CEUs.

For additional information, please visit: http://www.ohiodominican.edu/international/studyabroad/belize.asp. If you are interested in participating, please contact Melissa Ochal, Director of the International Office at ochalm@ohiodominican.edu or at 614-251-4645.

Leave a Legacy
Some individuals find that they can make a larger gift to Ohio Dominican upon their death than they could have during their lifetime. If you have ever considered a bequest to ODU through your Will and need assistance with the verbiage or logistics, please contact David VanWassenhove at 614-251-4643 or vanwassd@ohiodominican.edu.
