From Your Alumni Office
As you count your blessings and give thanks this month, I hope you stop for a moment and think about Ohio Dominican. Your experiences as a student on this campus helped you, in one or more ways, be who and where you are at this moment in your life. I hope that your memories are golden and that these thoughts motivate you to think about our students today who have replaced you in Erskine, St. Albert, Wehrle, Spangler, Sansbury and Fitzpatrick Halls. Please say a prayer for them and their professors. And please express your support of them through your participation in our Annual Fund, if you have not yet done so. Your gift, of any amount, will make a difference in their lives and that of your alma mater. And sincere thanks to all who have already made a gift or pledge to this year’s fund!

I hope you had the opportunity to talk with our amazing students who called many of you during our annual Fall Phonathon. They are such great kids and a proud reflection of ODU and the tradition you helped to establish. We are especially grateful to all of you who have responded kindly towards their requests! We also wish to thank the following firms who generously provided prizes to award as incentives during these five weeks of calling:

Chipotle   Johnny Rocket’s   Sodexho Food Services
Cup ‘o Joe ODU Bookstore   Starbucks

Dr. Jack Calareso continues to improve following his heart surgery. Being back on campus with the students he loves obviously agrees with him. He, and we, appreciate your good wishes and prayers.

Please let us know what you think about the ODU Link and anything else that you feel like mentioning to us. We love to hear from you and welcome the opportunity to keep you connected to your classmates and alma mater.

We are thankful for you and ask God to shower abundant blessings on you and yours,

Sue  & Tammy

Holiday Events 2006
ODU alumni and their families are invited to participate in these holiday events this holiday season.

Annual Christmas Toy Drive
Erskine Hall
November 14 - December 8, 2006

ODU joins the Salvation Army Angel Tree Gift Program. A tree decorated with gift tags will be located in the front of Erskine Hall. Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony
The Oval
November 28, 2006 at 6:00 p.m.

The celebration begins in the Colonial Room of Sansbury Hall. All are welcome to join in this enchanting evening of lights, songs, and expressions of holiday cheer! (No RSVP required.) With the assistance of young children ringing bells to magically turn on the lights, the procession will set the campus aglow with the brightness and joy of the holiday season. ODU’s Marching Band will be on hand to play holiday favorites. Refreshments will be available in Hamilton Hall following the Lighting. Please come and join the fun!

A New Face in the
Advancement Office

Please join us in welcoming Gillian Kennedy, who is the new Research Assistant in the Advancement Office. Gillian graduated with honors from the University of Liverpool in 2001 with a B.S. in Genetics. Prior to working at ODU, she was the Assistant to the Vice President in the Development and Alumni Office at Villa Julie College in Stevenson, MD.

We welcome Gillian to our team.

Tim Klatte ’95 Sends His Greetings from China
Recently, our office heard from ODU alumnus Tim Klatte, who moved to China earlier this year. We asked him about how he came to live and work in China, and he shared the following story with us.

Tim graduated in 1995 with a BA in International Business and Business Administration. He was first introduced to China by the Ohio Dominican International Office, which had sponsored a semester abroad opportunity in Kaifeng, China. Tim was one of five students who signed up for the program, and it was a life-changing event for him. He met his wife while in China in 1994, and they have been married for nearly five years and have a one-year-old daughter. As a result of the journey he started at Ohio Dominican more than a decade ago, he is working and living in the country introduced to him by ODU.

After serving three years as a Foreign Service Officer for the US Government, Tim joined Deloitte and Touche’s New York office in January 2005 and worked in the Research & Development Group, advising top leadership on various issues, including strategies to stay competitive and the firm’s China initiative. He decided to join Deloitte because he knew the firm was investing heavily in the China operation and that was where he ultimately wanted to build his career

In April 2006, Tim and his family moved to Shanghai, when he accepted a position as a Senior Manager on Deloitte’s Clients and Markets team, where he is able to utilize his Chinese language, business, and cultural skills. While there are some challenges to living in China, Tim has found life there to be wonderful and rewarding. If you are interested in learning more about Tim’s experiences in China, please e-mail him at tiklatte@deloitte.com.cn.

Another Way to Support ODU
If you are thinking about a year-end gift to Ohio Dominican, a new way to do so is through an IRA Charitable Rollover. President Bush recently signed this bill into law. Donors who are at least 70 ½ years of age may transfer up to $100,000 ($200,000 per couple, if both spouses have their own IRAs) without taxable implications. A tax deduction will not be allowed, but that is offset by the fact that the distribution from the IRA is not considered ordinary income. In addition, a charitable gift from your IRA goes toward satisfying your annual minimum distribution requirement. The funds must be transferred electronically to ODU’s custodial bank, or a check can be made out to ODU from the bank or broker handling the IRA fund.

This provision will be available only through December 2007.

For more information, please contact Dave VanWassenhove, Director of Planned Giving, at (614) 251-4643 or vanwassd@ohiodominican.edu.
