McCain Speech, Oscars, college life

So the McCain speech/rally was pretty interesting. As soon as I got there, I was talking on my cell phone in the hotel lobby and McCain walked right by me. He looks good for someone his age (he's 71). And shorter than I thought, probably about 5'8. The speech itself was interesting. It was kind of comical how people were getting all fired up for a speech that's been given thousands of times--kind of like a high school pep rally. Which got me thinking about political language in general, how the candidates blugen you to death with catch phrases like "straight talk express," "change/hope," "ready to lead on day one." It's just so dumbed down. And if I hear one more thing about "What would Reagan/JFK do?" I'm going to go crazy. Maybe we should ask the candidates themselves what they would do. There's a radical idea.

Switching gears a little bit, the Oscars were pretty interesting. I saw No Country For Old Men this past Saturday and I think it deservedly won best picture. Plus the Coen bothers finally got their long overdue best director award(s). The movie basically turns the old Western story on its head, the one where the sheriff always gets his man and good always triumphs over evil. In this movie good doesn't always triumph. There's a gray area where people aren't wholly good or wholly bad. And that's the movie's best quality. It doesn't necessarily give you neat and tidy answers so much as it probes you to start asking the right questions. Good flick. Seriously. But thank God Daniel Day-Lewis won best actor for his role in There Will Be Blood. For all of that film's shortcomings, Day-Lewis very much makes it worth seeing.

Other than that, Spring break is inching ever closer. Classes are going good (lots of reading), but it'll be nice to go down to Florida with my sister, brother in law and little niece.  Just a couple essays and a few more midterms. Then it's sunny FLA followed by Easter.

We'll take it easy, Constant Reader (and by Constant Reader, I'm probably referring exclusively to my mother).

Cya!
