my courses this semester...

My favorite thing about this semester has been my class schedule and how it relates to my major.  You see, this has been the first semester that I’ve actually known what my major was, and had it declared.  My first couple of years I was Undecided and took classes that fulfilled my general requirements for a degree, and not any one degree in particular.  This semester because I designed my own major I worked with my advisor and hand-picked classes I thought would be relevant to the type of work I want to do.

This semester my classes are all very different and my homework doesn’t feel monotonous because I’m not doing the same type of work (i.e. all reading/writing papers, or all hands-on stuff) for every professor. I am taking psychology, media design, marketing, and news writing.  My media design class has been challenging for me because I am not the best with computers or art, but it has been a nice break from text book work.  Marketing has given me a different perspective on some business areas that I am used to looking at through a communications lens.  And my papers for psychology and news writing couldn’t be more different.  I get bored if I have to do the same type of work for too long so I have enjoyed having to do different types of studying.  Also this semester I’ve really been able to look deeper into areas that interest me.  Even though I am doing varying tasks for each class I can see how certain skills/knowledge from each will be useful to me when I graduate.

It was nice trying out different courses when fulfilling the liberal arts requirements for my degree and deciding which areas I wanted to pursue; however, it is a HUGE relief to finally know my studying and hard work has a direction.  Plus, it doesn’t hurt knowing that I will still be able to graduate on time!
