First Week Back!!

Hi!  My name is Erin Pope and I am a junior here at Ohio Dominican!  Wow, that’s really weird to say!  Being an upperclassman in college is really strange; the real world is creeping up more and more each day!  I’m majoring in Public Relations with a minor in marketing.  I’m from Hilliard, Ohio a suburb of Columbus which is about twenty minutes away from campus.

This is my second year at Ohio Dominican and actually my first year as a returning student to a school!  I attended Kent State University as a freshman and transferred to ODU at the beginning of my sophomore year.  Kent State definitely wasn’t the place for me.  One, it was two and half hours away from home (I’m really close with my family so that was really hard), two, it is a large school with over 26,000 students!  Going to lectures with 500+ people was a little hard to get used to.  A definitely think I'm a small school kind of girl!  I don’t regret my decision to go to Kent State at all.  It definitely opened my eyes to the real world and being out there on my own.  It was a great learning experience and I am so grateful to have gone through that right out of high school.

This summer definitely flew by and I cannot believe we’ve already gone through a week of classes!  I’m finally starting to get into my major courses which is really exciting because it gives me a chance to see what Public Relations is really about.  My other classes are okay; basic core classes:  theology, communications, and economics.  I really like my economics professor!  He’s hilarious!  He’s from a different country (don’t know where yet, I'll ask in the next class) and when he tells jokes with his accent, me and my roommate crack up every time!

Along with the typical classes and homework that come with the first week of school, I also began to work at our Admissions office as a Student Ambassador again.  I work there twice a week and give tours to prospective students.  It’s a great job that gives me the chance to meet a lot of new people and work with a great staff!  Plus, you get to do a lot of fun stuff like decorating the office; definitely my favorite!

This school year is not only my first year as a returning student to a school, but also my first year really living on my own!  My three roommates and I found a house about two minutes away from campus and moved in the first week of July!  We have a great set-up and we absolutely love it!  Definitely miss walking to class though.  Parking this year is a hassle, but a new dorm is being put up so we’ll have more room for all the students living on campus!

I am really excited to see some familiar faces around campus again and those unfamiliar ones as well!  I hope all the freshman enjoyed their first week of college and are ready for a lot more freedom and fun at ODU!  AND! I hope guys enjoyed your first week back as well!  If you haven’t gone back yet, good luck with your first week!

Well back to my econ homework!  Definitely have to get used to doing homework again!  Oh, and I have to give a shout-out to my boyfriend Chris.  You might remember him from his blog last year for ODU.  He was recognized by the Associated Press for his blog and I only hope I can live up to his standards! LOL

Have a good one guys!

-Erin
