Some items to be aware of
Hey!
I
thought that this week I would share some items about ODU's history and how
things are going on the construction.
History:
· The College was founded in 1911 by the Dominican
Sisters who came to the area in the 1850’s.
· The property was originally a
brickyard. The sisters had the property
cleared after they had purchased it and stacked by hand the remaining bricks
into a mound. They then covered the
mound with soil and placed a statue of St. Mary on the top.
· The college was originally
founded as a women's college and named
College of Saint Mary of the Springs.
The address of the college was made 1216 Sunbury Road, because the
Dominican order was founded in 1216.
· In 1964 the College of Saint
Mary of the Springs became co-educational.
· In 1968 the College’s name was
changed to Ohio Dominican College.
· In 2002, the name was again
changed to Ohio Dominican University with the addition of the master’s programs
in Business, Theology, Education, and Liberal Studies.
Construction:
Two of the campuses three large construction
projects are well underway. The foundation is almost done for the new residence
hall, and they will hopefully be under roof in just over a month. The
fence has been erected where the new parking lot will be and the Neighborhood
Center is coming down. With
construction on the Student Center beginning in the
spring, this is going to be a year with much in the way of campus
development.
