Living the Mission of Ohio Dominican University
There is a paragraph in the University's Mission Statement that
captures of one our central values as a community of learners and
scholars:
"Ohio Dominican welcomes to its
student body sincere seekers of truth whatever their age, gender, race,
religious background, or ethnic and cultural heritage. All whose
aspirations, maturity, and preparation draw them to pursuing a
liberating education mutually enrich one another in the quest for truth
in this small community of students, faculty, and staff, through
curriculum, supporting services, and informal learning opportunities
carried out in a climate of respect and freedom."
Anyone who spends time on our campus quickly sees the truth of these
sentences. While far from perfect, Ohio Dominican is a diverse
community representing people of various races, ages and backgrounds In
fact, the University points with pride to its large percentage of
minority students (over 25%) and its significant program for
non-traditional students (over 800 students).
Over the past several days, our faithful
commitment to this mission has been questioned by a group of students.
They believe that the University has not responded appropriately to
certain acts of vandalism in our buildings, some of which had racial
overtones. The action of these students has created a number of
reactions. In the coming days, we will engage in dialogue and
discussion on campus that will provide opportunities for all voices to
be heard and plans of action to meet the community's needs.
It is sad that such incidents of vandalism
take place on college campuses. It is hard to understand what motivates
someone to act in this manner, in disregard for their own campus and in
disrespect for the other members of their community. We will discover
those responsible and they will be punished, but that will not remove
the damage done to our community.
It is also sad that the students raising the
concerns about the response to these actions did not feel comfortable
engaging in dialogue with those responsible for leading this
institution. The “open door” policy of this campus is intended to
invite open conversation about all issues.
In the end, the experiences of the past few
days require us to ensure that our Mission Statement is more than
words. All of us … students, faculty and staff … have a responsibility
to live this mission and hold each other accountable for our values.
