What is your position at ODU?
I am an assistant professor of philosophy.

This semester I am teaching three courses. The first course, “Issues in Philosophy,” is an introductory 100-level philosophy course in which we read some basic texts from famous philosophers. We’ll start with the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle, and we’ll finish with contemporary philosophers.

The second is a 200-level course titled “Philosophy of the Person.” In it we’ll be reading an assortment of texts from philosophers who have written on human nature. We’ll spend a lot of time with the medieval Dominican St. Thomas Aquinas and also examine some questions about human life issues.

My third course is a special topics section called “Philosophy of History.” It is an upper-level philosophy course that examines philosophers who have developed theories about history. We’ll see them asking questions such as “Is history going somewhere?” “Does history repeat itself?” “Are there cycles in history?” We’ll read many texts including works by St. Augustine and Hegel.

I am also doing two independent studies with students this semester. The first covers topics in ancient philosophy, and the second examines the ancient idea that philosophy is a way of life.

Where did you receive your degree(s) and what are they in?
I received my B.A. from the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack, New Hampshire. The program was similar to a great books curriculum and I finished with a concentration in philosophy. I spent the second semester of my sophomore year in Italy at the Rome campus. For graduate studies I attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and earned an M.A. in philosophy, and afterwards I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at Marquette University in 2003.

How long have you been at ODU?
My wife and I moved to Ohio from Milwaukee in July 2003 and I started working at ODU shortly thereafter.

What is your favorite thing about ODU?
Do people count as things? I enjoy talking with students about questions in philosophy.

What is your favorite thing about ODU?
There are so many things. Perhaps the thing I like most is that Ohio Dominican is a University on the move. It is truly a time of renaissance here at ODU. The new student center, success of our athletic teams, and the new residence hall are just a few of the many things that show how ODU is a place that is growing and full of energy.
