October 19, 2007: The new residence hall construction currently taking place on the east side of Sunbury Road is still on schedule for completion and opening for the Fall semester of 2008 next August.  This new building will be named Lynam Hall, transferring the name from the previous Admission building on the west side of Sunbury Road and continuing to honor Sister Bernardine Lynam, who was president during the 1930’s of St. Mary of the Springs College, the predecessor name for Ohio Dominican University.  The current Lynam Hall will be deconstructed during the early part of the Spring semester to make way for student center construction.


October 3, 2007: Ron Seiffert, Vice President for University Resources gave a presentation on the new Bishop James. A Griffin Student Center and the new residence hall construction to the ODU community. Some of the highliths are:

  • The new residence hall will be completed by the fall of 2008.
  • It has been designed to fit with the current residence hall, but also has some extras.
  • he suite layout includes a common living space between each suite of rooms.
  • Every room will house two students and includes its own bathroom and sleeping and dressing areas.
  • In addition to a first-floor office (check-in desk, mail, etc.), vending machines, study lounge, and laundry facility, students will enjoy a large community room.
  • Each floor will also have a common lounge.
  • Update: Concrete for the residence hall will be poured the week of 10/8/07.

Some FAQ's about the Residence Hall & General Campus Construction:

General Construction Information

  • Throughout the new residence hall and Student Center projects, construction will be inconvenient at times (noise, equipment, parking, etc.).
  • Work hours for these projects will begin at 7:00 am at the latest. At some times, equipment may be turned on at earlier time to warm up.
  • Saturdays will be make-up days if there is inclement weather during the week.
  • Occasionally, a regular walkway may be closed for safety reasons. However, temporary paths will be constructed to minimize inconvenience.

Will parking near the residence halls be available again once the construction is complete?
Yes, 60 – 70 spaces will be available in what will become the quad.

How is the size of the common area in the new residence hall different that what’s in Aquinas?
The space is larger – 12’ x 19’.

What steps are being taken for student safety on campus while the construction is in progress?
The construction workers are professionals and will be onsite in teams. If there is a problem, please report it to Student Development and Safety & Security. ODU Security Officer foot patrols will also be increased during the construction.

Will midterms and finals be taken into consideration during construction? How can we study through the noise?
We will be sensitive to studying during those times. However, we cannot promise that it will be totally quiet.

Who will live in the new residence hall? Juniors and seniors?
That decision is still being made.

Will the furnishing in the new residence hall be the same as the other dorms?
No. Part of the budget for this building includes new furnishings that will be in a different style.
