Internships
Internships will prepare you for your profession and give you an idea of what a particular field is like. Internships can be taken for course credit, if your academic program is set up that way. Or you can do an internship that is not based on course credit. You should talk with your academic advisor to see how your program works. Either way, an internship will provide valuable experience and give substance to your resume, making you a more viable candidate for your new career.
Because there are hundreds of students from several schools competing for the best internship opportunities, you will need to prepare for your search well in advance. A good place to start is by making an appointment at the Career Development Center. We'll help you prepare your resume and provide guidance on this process. Students often overlook the value of other kinds of experience which can prepare them for better opportunities. Many such experiences involve community service, volunteering and activism. Examples include assisting organizations such as Village –to-Child, environmental groups, Girl Scouts, summer camps, camps for the disabled and the YMCA, to name a few. These can provide an opportunity to serve needs in line with your interests, gain unique personal and professional experience and build your resume. Such experiences will also better prepare you for a more challenging internship.
