Safety and Security
- Do not walk alone on campus at night. Use the escort service or walk with a group.
- Stay in well-lit, well-traveled area; avoid dark and isolated places.
- Always lock your car, roll up your windows and keep valuables out of sight in your car.
- Know the locations of emergency phones, campus phones and public phones where you could call for help if needed.
- Do not jog or bike at night or in unfamiliar areas.
- If someone tries to rob you, give up your valuables without resistance. Your life is more important than your possessions.
- Do not put your name, address, phone number, license number or other identifiers on your key chain. This can lead a criminal to you and your property if you lose your keys.
- Do not lend your keys to anyone or leave your door unlocked for a friend.
- Never prop open building doors. This is an open invitation to intruders.
- Be sure that you know the legitimacy of anyone you let into your home, apartment or residence hall. Do not be afraid to ask for identification or call for help.
- Engrave your valuables, and keep an inventory through "Operation Identification." An engraver and Valuables inventory sheets are available from officer Ryan Sharrer at the Safety and Security Department.
- Do not leave your purse/wallet, books, coat, laptop computers or other valuables unattended.
Call Safety and Security with any safety concerns.
- 90% of campus crimes are crimes of opportunity. You reduce your chances of being a crime victim by reducing the opportunity. By watching out for yourself and others, we can all contribute to a safe campus environment.
