Earning Exchange Credit through Study Abroad
Pre-approval of credit is required for all study abroad experiences. You will be registered for LNG 188: Study Abroad, which is a registration designation for students who choose to study abroad. When you provide an official transcript of the work done abroad, LNG 188 is replaced by the courses taken at the study abroad institution. While abroad, you must enroll in the equivalent of 12 semester credits per term in order to be considered full-time. Quarter credit hours are converted to semester hours according to the following formula: 1 quarter hour = .67 semester hour. If credit is not given in quarter or semester hours, an equivalency will be determined by the Registrar’s Office based upon available information. All credit is processed after the official transcript is received from the host university. Prior to returning home, please request an official transcript to be sent directly to ODU at the following address:
Office of the Registrar
Ohio Dominican University
1216 Sunbury Rd
Columbus, Ohio 43219
U.S.A
Once processed, the study abroad credit will appear on your ODU transcript as exchange credit and will not apply to any ODU residency requirement. Grades will appear on your ODU transcript and will be calculated into your cumulative grade point average.
You may apply study abroad credit toward general distribution requirements (excluding HUM 110 and 210), some major and minor requirements (depending upon major/minor), and elective credits. Please consult with your faculty advisor and the Registrar’s Office regarding specific equivalencies. In case there are any questions regarding course content, please keep a course description and syllabus for each course taken abroad. Copies should also be on file in the Office of the Registrar. Be sure you understand how the approved courses will fit into your intended degree program.
1. Direct Equivalency: The course taken abroad is similar to a course offered at ODU. For example, Medieval Europe taken abroad might be approved as HST 350.
2. Special Topics Equivalency: The course taken abroad does not have an exact ODU counterpart, but it would carry credit in a specific discipline. Such a course in the field of economics, for example, might be accepted as ECN 285: Special Topics.
3. Elective Equivalency: The course taken abroad has no equivalent ODU course or discipline but is a college level course and will count toward the number of credit hours needed for graduation.
All three types of credit, if successfully completed, will count toward the graduation requirement of 124 semester hours.
If you are studying abroad in the fall, please be certain that you have registered for the following spring semester prior to your departure. If you need to change your schedule while abroad, you may do so on ODU Online. If you are studying abroad in the spring, check your ODU email on a regular basis to find out when priority registration begins for the following academic year. Please consult with your faculty advisor via email regarding future courses.
You will then be able to register through ODU Online. You are encouraged to take care of all your registration needs as soon as possible to ensure placement in your preferred courses and sections.
