Ohio Dominican University Universal Truths
January
21, 2005
For just under a century, Ohio Dominican University has
existed and developed under the guiding motto, “to contemplate truth and
share the fruits of this contemplation.” In reflecting on the history
of this fine educational institution, four particular characteristics
consistently stand out as pillars of the ODU experience: FAITH, VALUES,
COMMUNITY, and SCHOLARSHIP.
This display illustrates these qualities, exhibiting primary
documents representing different aspects of Ohio Dominican life through
the decades. Items exhibited include original photographs of people and
buildings, postcards, yearbooks, college bulletins, news clippings, and
published books relating to the university and founding congregation.
Here are some interesting ODU facts included in the display:
- The present food services complex in Hamilton Hall was made possible
by a gift from the late
Dave Thomas of Wendy’s®
- Men’s basketball was the first official intercollegiate sport,
and games were first played in
what is now the Panther Plaza
- Up through the 1950s, one of the most important requirements for both
admission and graduation,
as documented in the college bulletin, was to be of good moral character
- Seventy years ago, the cost for full time tuition, room and board
for one year totaled about $350.00
This exhibition will be on display in the cases on the bottom
floor of Spangler Learning Center through Summer, 2005. Please take time to
come and appreciate the memories that make ODU what it is today.
