Books & Catalogs in the Context of
IDS179:
Books and catalogs are open doors to exploration,
which can be defined as a process whereby the self investigates, studies,
or analyzes.(1)
Exploration is an integral part of reading,
interpreting, and creating texts within a community; and effective exploration
is essential to responding to inquiry and participating fully within the
community.(2)
This section will help you to gain a much more thorough understanding
of a couple of forms of media that you will explore in IDS179 and your
other university courses: books and ebooks. You will also gain a better
understanding of how to navigate in multiple search systems to access
and explore these resources.

- Ebooks: books published online
- Book citation information: What a citation is and how to read citation
information in search tools and databases
- How to find books in the Library
- How to read book call numbers
- Searching in the ODU Library Catalog
- Searching in NetLibrary eBooks
- Searching in Project Gutenberg Book Catalog
Goals for this Section:
Upon completion of this section, students will:
- Be familiar with a variety of formats in which books can be published
- Understand how books can be accessed based on their formats
- Know how ODU Library is organized
- Comprehend the classification system used at ODU Library
- Identify appropriate tools to search for books
- Use effectively three search tools for finding books:
ODU Library Catalog and two ebooks databases
