What Resources Can Help Me Narrow My Topic?

These resources can help generate ideas to narrow your topic:

  • Specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks: Use these reference resources to get ideas about specific time periods, locations, populations, and issues of your topic.
  • ODU library catalog: Search the library catalog by subject heading. Many subject headings are broken down into more focused subheadings, based on location, time period, or particular characterists of a topic.
Example: A search under the subject "Internet" returns many possibilities, including:
    • Internet—Moral and ethical aspects
    • Internet—Social aspects
    • Internet—In higher education
  • Library database: Explore articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers to identify different aspects, issues, and perscpectives that you might focus on.
