FAQs for the Student Center & General Campus Construction

Parking Lot
Construction of the 285-space parking lot is scheduled to begin the week of October 8. This lot will expand the current Lot A to run north of the stadium and east to Sunbury Rd. The project is scheduled be completed during the Spring 2008 semester.

General Construction Information

  • Throughout the new residence hall and Student Center projects, construction will be inconvenient at times (noise, equipment, parking, etc.).
  • Work hours for these projects will begin at 7:00 am at the latest. At some times, equipment may be turned on at earlier time to warm up.
  • Saturdays will be make-up days if there is inclement weather during the week.
  • Occasionally, a regular walkway may be closed for safety reasons. However, temporary paths will be constructed to minimize inconvenience.
  • ODU has an e-mail account that you can use to send any questions, concerns, or comments: University Resources.

Who will provide the food service in the Student Center?
Sodexho is the preference to continue to provide food service. However, that is still being determined.

What steps are being taken for student safety on campus while the construction is in progress?
The construction workers are professionals and will be onsite in teams. If there is a problem, please report it to Student Development and Safety & Security. ODU Security Officer foot patrols will also be increased during the construction.

Will all students be able to use the new fitness equipment in the Student Center or just athletes?
The fitness equipment and facilities in the Student Center are available for all students to use.

Will each of the student organizations have their own office?
Panther Activity Council and Student Government will each have their own locations. Space considerations forthe other organizations is being determined.

What happens to the Underground and Panther Plaza after the Student Center is built?
The best use for those spaces, including if they can just continue to remain as they are, is being determined.

Will the band have a place to go in the Student Center?
In addition to an office, the band will have three to four practice rooms.

Will students be able to use the gyms for intramural sports, or will they just be for use by the athletes?
The schedule for using the gyms will be determined by the Student Development office. However, the size of the gyms allows them to be cordoned off for multiple uses at one time.

Will there be an indoor track?No, not in this phase of the building.

Will there be a bridge across Sunbury Road?
Yes, there will be a pedestrian walkway that will connect the Student Center to east campus; landing somewhere between Wehrle Hall and Spangler Learning Center.

With all of this construction, where will the May 2008 graduation be held?
The 2008 spring commencement will be held off-campus. See the graduation website for details.

What will the hours of the Student Center be?
The hours will be extended, but still need to be determined by Student Development and the student leadership.

Will the Student Center have the same orange brick as Alumni Hall?
No. The exterior will have a variation of tones and materials.

Will there be tile or carpet in the Student Center?
A number of different flooring materials will be used throughout the building, depending on the purpose of the room/space.

How will the fireplace work?
It will be a gas-lit fireplace. The usage has yet to be determined by the university.
