COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio Dominican University's Chorus and the Mockingbird Theatre Company will perform a production of the Beggar's Opera on Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m. on ODU's main campusĀ - 1216 Sunbury Road.

The performance will be conducted on a red theatre wagon on ODU's main oval (outside Erskine Hall). This event is free and open to the public. This landmark work of musical theatre satirizes British Restoration society through the exploits of Macheath, the Highwayman, and the rivalry of the women who love him.

Synopsis: "Captain" Macheath, the leader of a gang of Highwaymen, has just married Polly Peachum. Her father, knowing what a rascal Macheath is, decides to have him captured and brought to trial, hoping that if Macheath is hung, Polly could claim his fortune as her own. He therefore arranges for Macheath's arrest at a local tavern. Macheath is taken to Newgate prison where he is confronted by Lucy, the daughter of the jailor, who also wishes to marry him. Macheath persuades Lucy to set him free.

In the meantime, the jailor, suspicious of Macheath's relationship with his daughter, also wants to see the Highwayman brought to trial so his daughter can claim his fortune. While the two fathers discuss business with Mrs. Trapes, Macheath's new hiding place is revealed and he is arrested once again, and this time faces certain punishment. All seems lost, until the Narrator intervenes, giving the musical drama a happy ending.

"This performance incorporates a healthy dose of social satire intermingled with irreverent text set to popular music of the time," said ODU Choir Director Phillipa Burgess.

The Mockingbird Theatre Company is a traveling theatre troupe that specializes in reproducing the entertainments popular in America in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The red wagon is used to portray both the means of transport for the troupe, as well as the stage on which the troupe performs. The Beggar's Opera is the Mockingbird Theatre's second collaboration with the ODU Chorus.

The university's choir is a mixed choral group of male and female students, who study a variety of choral literature. The choir sponsors and participates in many university-sponsored events including Mass, the President's Dinner, holiday programs, commencement, and many others.
