Ohio Dominican University Invites Public To Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidential Inauguration



COLUMBUS, OH – (ODU) will celebrate history with several campus events by recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19 and the Inauguration of our 44th President, Barack Obama on Tuesday, January 20. The public is welcome to attend these special events at ODU’s main campus 1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, Ohio.

Monday, January 19, 2009

  • 12:00 p.m. - Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Movement

    Bring your lunch and stop by the Hamilton Hall to watch this PBS documentary screening and discussion about how ordinary citizens can make a difference.

  • 5:00 p.m. - ODU Students Presentation: The MLK Study Trip 2008

    ODU’s Black Student Union (BSU) members will share their experiences, through a presentation, of their tour of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. This event will be in the Colonial Room of Sansbury Hall.

  • 7:00 p.m. - The Great Debaters

    Inspired by a true story, The Great Debaters, reveals the seeds of the Civil Rights Movement in its story of Professor Melvin B. Tolson and his champion 1935 debate club. Refreshments will be provided.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

  • 11:00 a.m. - Presidential Inauguration Viewing

    Erskine Hall’s Matesich Theatre will have a big screen viewing of the Inauguration of the 44th President Barack Obama.

  • 1:00 p.m. - Roundtable: "Our World Today, Moving Forward Under New Leadership"

    As the United States moves forward with a new president, students will discuss how they can play a role in making our world (ODU) a better place. This discussion will take place in Erskine Hall Room 201.

In addition, ODU students will participate in a community service project at the YWCA Family Center on Monday, January 19 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Students will be transported from Main Campus to the YWCA Center - 900 Harvey Court (43219).
