COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Dominican University (ODU) will proceed to the second year of candidacy membership with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, effective September 1, 2009.

“Our athletic program’s transition to the NCAA is progressing as planned and I greatly appreciate all of the hard work and effort of the University faculty, staff and students who have been involved in this project,” said Interim President Ron Seiffert. “We look forward to continuing our ongoing relationship with the NCAA as second year candidacy members.” During the upcoming academic year, ODU will focus on the following:

Preparing for an onsite visit from the NCAA Membership Committee in Spring 2010 to assess the institution’s readiness for Provisional Membership

Working on areas identified in a self-study to making the institution a strong NCAA Division II member

Operating unofficially as NCAA Division II members so that all personnel and operations become normalized to function within this organization

Last summer ODU was awarded NCAA DII year one candidacy membership for the 2008-2009 academic year. During that time the University accomplished several requirements including visiting a peer institution; conducting assessment studies of current and future operations; attending various NCAA meetings including the national convention; and developing a strategic plan that addresses compliance, department operations, mission statement and incorporation of assessment report findings.

The Division II prescribed timeline for membership is three years. The first two years are spent in candidacy membership, followed by one year of provisional membership. Last month ODU accepted membership with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and will commence conference play effective August 2010. If accepted as full members, ODU will be the only university in Central Ohio to be NCAA D-II.
