Community Leader Pizzuti to Deliver Winter Commencement Address
Ohio Dominican University (ODU) will confer undergraduate and graduate degrees to more than 300 students at the 94th Winter Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. on main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, 43219 in Alumni Hall.
Community leader Ann Pizzuti will serve as commencement speaker and receive an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa, in recognition of her exemplary volunteer leadership and service for the common good; her commitment to the values of higher education and lifelong learning; and her championing of the mission and goals of Ohio Dominican University.
As a dedicated community leader, Ann Pizzuti has helped achieve substantial progress in Columbus’s nonprofit sector. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, Pizzuti is a founding member of Marburn Academy, a school for students who learn differently; president and board member of Action for Children, the source for child care and early learning services in Central Ohio; vice chairperson and board member of The Columbus School for Girls, a college preparatory day school; member of the Columbus Foundation Governing Committee, an organization to assist donors and others in strengthening and improving the community for the benefit of all residents; president and board member of Hospice at Riverside and Grant; board member and member of the capital campaign steering committee and cabinet of the YWCA of Columbus; chairperson of the United Way campaign; and founding member of The Women’s Fund, a public foundation leading social change in Columbus, and empowering women and girls to realize their full potential.
Pizzuti earned the YWCA Women of Achievement Award in 1999, recognizing women who have made extraordinary contributions to their families, workplaces, and communities. In 2007, Pizzuti and her husband, Ron, were presented with the Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award, honoring those whose efforts to prevent suffering, and protect life and health have improved lives in greater Columbus. The United Way of Central Ohio awarded Pizzuti the Champion of Children Award for making a difference in the lives of children.
Pizzuti was an active member of Ohio Dominican University’s Board of Trustees for 10 years, from April 1994 to May 2004. During her tenure, she chaired the Development Committee; co-chaired Phase III of the Making a Difference Endowment Campaign and the Presidential Search Committee; and participated on the Educational Affairs Committee. She also worked on the Student Center Campaign Committee, and served as a spokesperson, convener, and supervisor at functions and meetings.
