Free Tax Return Service Performed by Certified Students offered February 26 - April 13

Once again accounting students at Ohio Dominican will offer free income tax return preparation assistance for qualified individuals through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA offers free tax help to people with low-to moderate-income (generally $49,800 and below). Through this innovative and successful program, ODU accounting students offer assistance with special credits, including earned income tax credit, child tax credit, and credit for the elderly.

Accounting students, usually juniors or seniors are certified by the IRS as tax preparers. Under faculty supervision (all faculty supervisors are CPAs) students prepare federal, state, local school and city income tax returns. For the 2010 VITA Program, led by ODU Assistant Professor Bob Osborne and Assistant Professor Maggie Gilmore, 12 ODU students prepared 275 tax returns, more than what the group accomplished in 2009.

In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, the program offers free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper, and even faster if they have their refund deposited directly into their bank account.

The VITA program operates at ODU’s main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43219 in Erskine Hall Room 214. “The program is part of Ohio Dominican’s tradition of service to the surrounding community,” said Professor Osborne. The program opens on Saturday, February 26 and the schedule for this season is as follows:

  • Every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (except March 12)
  • Every Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. (except March 9)
  • Monday, March 21 and April 4 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
  • VITA site closes April 13

Due to the volume of tax returns we prepare we use HandsOn Central Ohio (formally named Firstlink) to schedule appointments for our VITA site. You can make an appointment for our VITA site by calling Firstlink at 211 in Franklin County or 614-221-6766 – ask to speak to the VITA scheduler and request to set up an appointment at the ODU VITA site.
