The Ohio Dominican University community is saddened by the sudden death of Sister Catherine Colby, O.P., Ed.D., ’68, the University’s Vice President for Mission and Identity and Director of the Center for Dominican Studies, on Friday, December 2, 2011.

Sr. Catherine was an active member of the Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Peace for nearly 50 years. She attended the College of St. Mary of the Springs, from which she received a bachelor’s degree in Education in 1968. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from St. Joseph’s College in Cincinnati; an M.Ed. in Educational Administration from Xavier University of Cincinnati; and an Ed.D. in Curriculum Development and Systematic Change from Nova Southeastern University of Florida.

Sr. Catherine had a long and distinguished profession and career as a Dominican Sister and educator. Prior to joining the Ohio Dominican faculty in 1981, she served as a teacher and school administrator in a variety of institutions in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Mexico. Additionally, she served as Vocation Director and Director of Candidates for the Dominican Congregation.

At Ohio Dominican, she held the position of Associate Professor of Education in the University’s Division of Education, where she served as a faculty member for 23 years and as the division chair for seven of those years. In December 2003, Sr. Catherine was appointed Director of the Center for Dominican Studies and in 2008, she was appointed to the newly created position of Vice President for Mission and Identity.

Sr. Catherine was a dedicated member of Ohio Dominican’s campus community – first as a student, and then as an alumna, a tenured faculty member and administrator, and finally as the leader of the Center for Dominican Studies and the Office of Mission and Identity. She also was a beloved member of her Order for nearly five decades. Sister Catherine was professed in religious life on August 8, 1963. In 2013, she was to celebrate her Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) as a Dominican Sister.

A campus memorial service will be held to honor Sr. Catherine at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 in Christ the King Chapel. The public is invited to attend. The funeral for Sr. Catherine was held on December 6 in the Motherhouse Chapel, followed by her burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne, Ohio. The Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Peace held a prayer service and Vespers at the Motherhouse Chapel on December 5.
