My mom was a single mother who wanted my brother and me to go to college. My brother got a partial athletic scholarship toODU, but my mom really didn’t know how we would pay for both of us. The Financial Aid staff at ODU helped a lot, and communicated with our family about how the finances of college work.
I worked hard at my grades in high school and the summer before I came to Ohio Dominican, I worked four jobs. I applied for every scholarship I could find and received $9,000 in outside scholarships. I also had a work-study job on campus.
As a result, I did not have to take out any loans to pay for my first year of school. ODU’s Financial Aid staff did a great job of informing us about other aid opportunities I could apply for. I also received need-based aid. I’m in the Honors Program and the band, both of which include financial awards.
I think the Financial Aid process at Ohio Dominican is helpful and easy to understand – someone was available for us all the time. They made it simple.
My mom is very proud and happy that my brother and I got to do so much at ODU. At first, the financial question was a huge concern for us, but the people here helped us find a way to manage it. I would tell anyone looking at their finances that a big part of making this happen is having an open and ongoing dialogue with your parents and the university.
It’s a blessing that ODU does so much to make it possible.
