Ohio Dominican University will welcome retired Army Colonel, former chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, and renowned national security analyst Lawrence Wilkerson on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023. Wilkerson will present “Nexus of Climate Change and the Military” at 7 p.m. in the Bishop James A. Griffin Student Center in rooms 258-260, located on ODU’s campus at 1215 Sunbury Road, Columbus, Ohio 43219.

The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Click here to register.

“The United States military will soon confront a broad range of issues related to climate change, from vehicle emissions, to rising sea levels, to mass migrations and failed states,” said ODU’s PATRIOTS Program director, Major General Dennis Laich, (Ret.) AUS. “Few institutions in the world have the resources and experience to deal with these challenges, and the United States military is already straining to address its traditional missions. Col. Wilkerson is uniquely qualified to discuss this challenge, and what should be done to address it.”

Wilkerson most recently served as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Government and Public Policy at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He also has served in numerous roles including as chief of staff to Colin Powell at the U.S. Department of State and associate director and member of that department’s Policy Planning staff under Ambassador Richard Haass. Wilkerson served 31 years in the U.S. Army as both enlisted man and officer. His final assignments were as special assistant to then-Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell from 1989 to 1993, and as deputy director and director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College from 1993 to 1997.

Wilkerson has been awarded the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Bronze Star, among other awards and decorations. At the Department of State, he earned the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award and two Superior Honor Awards.

He has been published in numerous publications, including The American Conservative, the Los Angeles Times, the Baltimore Sun, the Miami Herald, the New York Daily News, and other magazines and newspapers across the country, and has appeared on television with Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Chris Hayes, Ed Shultz, Lawrence O’Donnell, Rachel Maddow, Wolf Blitzer, Chris Cuomo, Alisyn Camerota, the BBC's Hardtalk and Newsnight, and others.

The event is sponsored by ODU's PATRIOTS Program and Sua Sponte, ODU's Student Veterans Association. For more information on ODU's military services, visit ohiodominican.edu/Military or contact 614-251-7400 or military@ohiodominican.edu.
