Life of the Mind Presents Alfred Tibor

October 14, 2003

COLUMBUS, OH - World-renowned sculptor and Holocaust survivor Alfred Tibor will speak at Ohio Alfred Tibor Dominican University on Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wehrle Gallery. The lecture, entitled Hope and Celebration of Life, will detail Tibor's amazing life and expound on his belief that his destiny is to design memorials to the Holocaust.

Alfred Tibor was born Alfred Goldstein in Konyar, Hungary, in 1920. Although he was a talented gymnast, he could not compete as a member of the Hungarian team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, so he became an acrobatic entertainer. Following an unsuccessful attempt to come to the United States, at age 20, Tibor was drafted into a German labor battalion on the eastern front. After two and a half years, he was captured by the Russians and spent five years in a prisoner-of-war camp in Siberia. Tibor was one of two survivors from a group of 273 men in his camp in Siberia. When he was freed in 1947, he learned that he and one brother were the only survivors in his family. As a tribute to their older brother, Tibor Goldstein, who was executed in a camp, Alfred and Andre changed their last name to Tibor.
