ODU Theatre Presents Antigone
October 21, 2003
COLUMBUS, OH -- Ohio Dominican University will launch its 2003-2004 theatre season with the play Antigone -- one of three plays in the Theban Trilogy written by Sophocles in 430 B.C.
The production will be staged in The Little Theatre in Erskine Hall on Ohio Dominican's main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road. The curtain time for Nov. 20-22 is 7:30pm. There is a $5.00 admission charge, and free parking is available in the Visitor's Lot on the west side of Sunbury Road.
Antigone follows the story of Oedipus' daughter Antigone, who defies the State by burying the body of her dead brother. She believes that the gods' laws are more powerful than the State's. As a result, she disobeys King Creon's decree that her brother's body be left in the open for the vultures and dogs. When Creon learns of her defiance, she is sentenced to death and the consequences of his arrogance and pride end in the death of not only Antigone, but Creon's son and wife as well.
The play is directed by Anne Diehl, in her second year at Ohio Dominican as Director of Theatre. Last year's productions included Riders to the Sea by J.M. Synge, and A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare.
A producer, director and actress, Diehl has performed and produced in New York City and the Midwest. A member of the Actor's Equity Association, her local credits include CATCO's production of Three Tall Women, and The Irish and American Repertory Theatre's production of Molly Sweeney. She recently finished filming an Independent feature film, Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing, to be released in 2004.
