State Representative Dr. Joyce Beatty to Address Winter Commencement

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Ohio Dominican University will hold its 80th commencement exercise and the third winter commencement ceremony in its history, on December 20, 2003. 185 students will have degrees conferred upon them as they are joined by hundreds of family and friends in Alumni Hall.
State Representative Joyce Beatty, Ph.D. will deliver the commencement address.
Joyce Beatty is the first woman to represent the 27st House District in the Ohio House of Representatives, where she also serves as Assistant Minority Leader. As a legislator, she has been involved with initiatives against racism and hate crimes; supported mentoring programs for young people; and advocated for women's health issues. Dr. Beatty serves on the Health and Family Services, Civil and Commerce Law, and Finance and Appropriations Committees. She is also the president of Joyce Beatty & Associates, Inc., a management consultant company that specializes in diversity awareness training and strategic planning.
Her husband, former State Representative Otto Beatty, Jr., served in the legislature for 19 years and was once on the House Democratic leadership team. Since leaving the legislature in 1999, he has devoted his time to his law practice, Otto Beatty Jr. & Associates, and to various real estate ventures.
During the ceremony, Joyce and Otto will receive honorary degrees from the university. Joyce will be conferred an honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service, and Otto, an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws.
