Dr. Maura Ryan to be Featured in ODU's Life of the Mind Series

COLUMBUS, OH – Dr. Maura Ryan, Associate Professor of Christian Ethics, the University of Notre Dame, will speak at Ohio Dominican University on Thursday, October 6, 2005 , at 7:30 p.m. in the Colonial Room, as part of the university’s Dominican Life of the Mind Series. The lecture, entitled Bioethics and the Common Good,will elaborate on the significant impact of bioethics on today’s society.
Sponsored by ODU’s Center for Dominican Studies, the Dominican Life of the Mind Series provides occasions for the co mm unity to gather to reflect upon the ideas and events that shape our culture.
The lecture is free and open to the public. The Colonial Room is located in Sansbury Hall on Ohio Dominican University ’s main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road , Columbus . Free parking is available in the Visitor’s Lot, west of Sunbury Road
Dr. Ryan’s areas of interest include bioethics, health policy, feminist ethics, and fundamental moral theology. She co-edited a book on global stewardship with Todd David Whitmore and recently completed a book on reproductive technologies. Her articles have appeared in the Hastings Center Report, The Journal of Philosophy, Medicine, Ethics and Behavior . Dr. Ryan is also on the Board of Directors for the Society of Christian Ethics and the editorial board of the Religious Studies Review and Ethics and Behavior. She serves on both the Healthcare Advisory Consortium and the ethics committee for Hospice in St. Joseph County . Currently she is working on the challenge of assisted suicide for feminist ethics.
Dr. Ryan received a bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University, a master’s degree from Boston College , and a master’s degree in Philosophy as well as a Ph. D. from Yale University . Currently, Dr. Ryan teaches Christian Ethics at Notre Dame.
The Center for Dominican Studies was established through a generous gift by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs. The Center was founded on the ideals of promoting Dominican preaching and education and becoming a public voice of the University and community regarding issues of importance to church, culture and society.
