Ohio Dominican Appoints Powell as Director of New Advising Center

COLUMBUS , OH – Ohio Dominican University has appointed Torrance Powell the Director of its new Academic Advising Center.
Prior to joining Ohio Dominican, Powell served as an academic advisor and first-year advisor at Miami University in Oxford and as an Honors Program advisor at Bowling Green State University . He has taught courses in Career Development, Student Development and Career/Life Planning.
ODU created the Academic Advising Center to expand the advising services currently offered to students. Specifically, the Center will provide focused support to new and transfer students in their first year at Ohio Dominican. Freshmen and students with undeclared majors can visit the Center to get counseling on academic choices, plan schedules and devote time to structuring their university experience. The Academic Advising Center will also provide intervention services for students having trouble with their grades. The Center will work in partnership with the University’s Career Development Center and the Academic Resource Center , providing a broader balance of support for students.
“We have designed the Academic Advising Center to ease a students’ transition into college,” said Powell. “The Center will provide a complementary component to the existing support structure, and foster mentoring relationships between students and faculty members. Our staff is highly capable and motivated to ensure the success of Ohio Dominican students.”
Powell earned a master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University and bachelor’s degrees in both Environmental Biology and Philosophy from Heidelberg College . He has been a member of the National Academic Advising Association, the American College Personnel Association, the Bowling Green Student Development Association and the Mid-East Honors Association. He currently resides in Columbus .
The Adademic Advising Center, located in Erskine Hall on ODU’s main campus on Sunbury Road, will host a “grand opening” on August 18, 2005, when students return to campus for fall semester.
