ODU Arts and Events Calendar - Spring 2005

COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio Dominican University will offer a variety of unique exhibits and events for the 2005 Spring Semester. Unless otherwise stated, all events are free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Visitors Lot, west of Sunbury Road.

St. Thomas Aquinas Convocation

Professor James V. Schall, S.J. "The Relevance of St. Thomas Aquinas" Wednesday, January 26 at 10:30 a.m. The Little Theatre (second floor of Erskine Hall)

Professor Schall, from the Department of Government at Georgetown University, will be the keynote speaker for Ohio Dominican University's annual Convocation in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas. This event is sponsored by ODU's Division of Theology and Philosophy.

Dominican Lecture Series

The Dominican Lecture Series was established by ODU's Center for Dominican Studies to promote the Dominican charism of preaching and provide opportunities for members of the University and the community to understand and experience the meaning and value of Dominican education.

Donald J. Goergen, O.P. "Challenges for Colleges and Universities in the New Millennium" Thursday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Little Theatre (second floor of Erskine Hall)

The well-known Dominican preacher, teacher, lecturer, author and theologian will present on the topic, and Dr. Karen Holbrook, President, The Ohio State University; Thomas Noe, Chair of the Ohio Board of Regents; and ODU President Jack Calareso will serve as panelists.

Fr. Goergen has taught Christology and spirituality in the United States, Africa and Asia, and is a former prior provincial of the Dominican friars of the Central Province in the United States. He is a member of the Friends of God Dominican Ashram Community in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a community with intense spiritual practices and a particular emphasis on the practice of silence, simplistic living, and the value of interreligous practice and openness to all religious traditions.

Thomas O'Meara, O.P. "The Future of the Church: Insights from the Dominican Past and Present." Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. Colonial Room, Sansbury Hall

Fr. O'Meara is a renowned theologian, author and Dominican scholar. A professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, he is the author of the recent book, Thomas Aquinas Theologian, which examines the origins and originality of St. Thomas Aquinas. O'Meara examines Aquinas' theology in two areas: the psychology of the Christian spiritual life, and the Catholic understanding of the liturgy, particularly the Eucharist.

Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows

The Woodrow Wilson Foundation Visiting Fellows Program was established to encourage the flow of ideas between the academic and non-academic sectors of society, and to connect a liberal arts education with the world beyond campus. Each year, Fellows spend a week on ODU's campus, helping students and teachers relate education to the needs of American society. Through classes, seminars, workshops, lectures, and informal discussions, Fellows, students, and faculty create a better understanding between the academic and non-academic worlds.

Ron Allen and Adaora Udoji Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. Wehrle Gallery, Wehrle Hall

Journalists and Woodrow Wilson Foundation Visiting Fellows Ron Allen and Adaora Udoji will speak as part of Ohio Dominican's Honors Program during a week-long stay at the University. Ron Allen is an award-winning NBC News correspondent based in New York who spent the past several years stationed in London covering stories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. During a journalism career that spans more than 20 years, Allen has been a correspondent for NBC News, ABC News and CBS News, covering events such as the War in Iraq, the War on Terror and the conflict in Kosovo.

Adaora Udoji, Allen's wife, is an award-winning general news correspondent for the CNN News Group, based in New York. Previously she was an international correspondent with ABC News where she reported and produced international stories covering Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Udoji has covered the War in Iraq, the War in Afghanistan, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Pope John Paul II, and several sporting events including Wimbledon, the British Open and the Tour de France.

Theatre

Haunted by God: The Life of Dorothy Day Monday, March 21, 2005 at 7:30 pm The Little Theatre (second floor of Erskine Hall)

Haunted by God is a 90-minute one-person play to be performed by Chicago's Still Point Theatre Collective founder Lisa Wagner. The play is about Dorothy Day, co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement, and follows Dorothy from her days as a 17-year-old Greenwich Village bohemian, through her middle years as a social activist and journalist, to her later years as a mature teacher. This event is co-sponsored by The Office of Academic Affairs and The Center for Dominican Studies.

Spring ODU Theatre Production: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum April 8-9 at 8:00 p.m. and April 10, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. The Little Theatre (second floor of Erskine Hall)

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a student musical production. Tickets for the event are $5.00 at the door. Further information and questions can be addressed to theatre@ohiodominican.edu.

Literary Brunch

"Realities on the Writing Life: From Ideas to Novel," by Karen Harper Sunday, April 24 at Noon The Colonial Room, Sansbury Hall

Karen Harper is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author. Her most recent suspense novels are set among the Ohio Amish and explore situations, including hate crimes, facing the Amish in today's world. Several of her books will be available for purchase and a book signing will take place at this event. Harper's appearance coincides with ODU's annual literary brunch that honors the late Ohio Dominican faculty member Monsignor Leonard Fick. Proceeds from the event benefit the Monsignor Leonard Fick Scholarship Fund, for ODU students majoring in English.

Immediately preceding the brunch, there will be a Memorial Mass in Christ the King Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Greg Jones, ODU's Director of Campus Ministry, as the Celebrant. The Mass and literary event are open to all.

Wehrle Art Gallery

Ohio Dominican University's Wehrle Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 4:00 p.m. Wehrle Gallery is located in Wehrle Hall. Admission to the gallery is free.

The Ohio Dominican University Permanent Collection December 20, 2004 - April 24, 2005

Ohio Dominican University's Permanent Collection is an impressive compilation of more than 150 oil paintings, watercolors, serigraphs and posters donated by art benefactors Joe Kenefick and John Pappas.

Ohio Dominican University Senior Thesis Exhibition May 1 - 24

Opening Reception: Sunday, May 1, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Wehrle Gallery, Wehrle Hall. This exhibition features the work of ODU seniors majoring in Fine Arts.

Life of the Mind Series Lectures

Ohio Dominican's Life of the Mind Series provides occasions for the community to gather to reflect upon the ideas and events that shape our culture. Sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Humanities Program, the series features artists, musicians, intellectuals, and critics who contribute to the life of the mind.

On American Art March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Wehrle Gallery, Wehrle Hall

Dr. Mark Cole, Curator of American Art at the Columbus Museum of Art, will elaborate on his view of art and its significant impact.

Seraphin Trio (Columbus Symphony Orchestra Chamber group) April 12 at 7:30 p.m. Wehrle Gallery, Wehrle Hall

The Seraphin Trio features CSO members David Edge on violin, Steve Wedell on viola and Richard Bell on cello. For the past 15 years, the trio has performed as part of Central Ohio's Chamber Music Series.

Catherine of Siena Lecture April 28 at 7:30 p.m. Wehrle Gallery, Wehrle Hall

Dr. Perry Cahill, ODU Professor of Theology, presents the annual St. Catherine of Siena Lecture.
