Ohio Dominican's Village to Child Program
Appoints Advisory Board Members
February 7, 2005
COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio Dominican University's community outreach program,
Village to Child, has appointed 15 members to its Advisory Board, which
serves in an advisory role to the program director, monitors fiscal operations
and assists in fundraising for the program. The Board is comprised of ODU faculty,
parents of VTC participants, representatives from civic organizations, community
and business leaders, and educators from Columbus Public Schools who believe
in the mission of the program.
Village to Child is an academic school year program designed to raise
the educational achievement of 100 middle and high school students who live
in the neighborhoods which surround the college campus. Village to Child
invites students to the campus to participate in programs focused on science,
reading, math, the arts, and technology. Students come to ODU one to three
days per week to receive tutoring, mentoring, and cultural enrichment. ODU
students are recruited in the fall to serve as mentors and tutors.
Some of the Advisory Board members are also volunteers with Village
to Child. Board member Lisa Ingram says, "I participate in Village to Child
activities because I believe in the mission of the program - to help kids
in the 43219 zip code area stay in school and graduate. They are great kids
with the same hopes and dreams that I had growing up, except they often have
greater challenges to deal with. I have been a Village to Child math tutor
for four years and will continue this year. I enjoy being able to help a
child understand a subject that I love. It is very inspiring to see a child
understand a math problem with my help. The kids make me laugh at the end
of my long work day, and I really enjoy interacting with them."
