Ohio Dominican Announces Center for Dominican Studies Events for 2006-2007

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Dominican University’s Center for Dominican Studies will offer a variety of events during the 2006-2007 season. Most events are free and open to the public but registration is required.

Dominican Life of the Mind Series Lectures

The Center for Dominican Studies’ Dominican Life of the Mind Series provides occasions for the community to gather to reflect upon the ideas and events that shape our culture.  The series features artists, musicians, intellectuals and critics who contribute to the life of the mind.

A Contemporary Reflection on the Decree on Ecumenism of Vatican II
Featuring: The Most Rev. Robert J. McManus

The fifth bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, Bishop McManus holds a licentiate and doctoral degree in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.


Secularization, the Church and Society
Featuring: Robert Royal, Ph.D.

Dr. Royal is a scholar, author and Director of the Faith and Reason Institute in Washington, D.C. His latest books include: The God that Did Not Fail, The Pope’s Army: 500 Years of the Papal Swiss Guard and The Catholic Martyrs of the Twentieth Century: A Comprehensive Global History.

The Death Penalty: How Just is Our System of Justice?
Featuring: Sr. Helen Prejean

Sr. Helen is a Sister of St. Joseph of Medaille (Louisiana.) Her book entitled Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of The Death Penalty in the United States was on the New York Times Best Seller List for 31 weeks. In 1996, the book was developed into a major motion picture starring Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen and Sean Penn as a death row inmate.

A Symposium: The Role of Mary in the Church
Featuring keynote speaker The Most Reverend Frederick F. Campbell, Bishop of the Diocese of Columbus

The symposium will engage a variety of theologians and historians including The Most Reverend James A. Griffin, Fr. Bertrand A. Buby, Director of the International Research Institute, University of Dayton, Sr. Thoma Swanson, O.P. artist, scholar and former Peruvian missionary and Sr. M. Jean Frist, of the University of Dayton. The panel will address topics including: Mary in the Scriptures, Mary in the Visual Arts, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Mary - Our Sister and the Communion of Saints. Fee: $20. A Living Faith? A New Generation?
Featuring Peter Steinfels, Ph.D.

New York Times religion columnist and Associate Professor of the Roman Catholic Church in America. Dr. Steinfels has been a visiting professor of history at Georgetown University and of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is co-director of The Fordham Center on Religion and Culture in New York City.

Sr. Nancy Murray, a Dominican Sister of Adrian, Michigan, in a one-woman performance shares the life and works of this 14th century Dominican mystic and saint who spoke boldly to popes and princes. Sister Nancy is the sister of actor Bill Murray. Admission is free to the performances, but reservations are requested. To reserve a seat at a performance, email the Center for Dominican Studies.

Two other series open to the public are the Truth Seekers Series and The Dominican Conversation Circles.  These luncheon/dinner events will feature speakers on various topics relevant to the church, culture and society.  More information on the series is available on www.ohiodominican.edu/dominicanstudies. Ohio Dominican University’s Center for Dominican Studies was established through a generous gift by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs.
