COLUMBUS, OHIO – Ohio Dominican University recently granted the newly-created Maish Family Business Endowed Scholarship Award to Jeremiah Guappone of Lisbon, Ohio.
The scholarship was created with a gift from Judy and Tom Maish, founders of Contract Sweepers and Equipment, to establish the scholarship. Candidates must be a member of a family-owned business and meet academic standing, community involvement and financial need criteria.
Tom Maish, a longtime advisory board member of the Family Business Center, housed on Ohio Dominican’s campus, helped start what was then known as Contract Sweepers in 1960, along with his parents. The Maishes sold the company in 2004 to its employees. The company employs around 100 workers.
“This newly-created scholarship recognizes the importance of developing strong future leadership for family-owned businesses,” said Dick Emens, Executive Director of the Family Business Center of Central Ohio.
Guappone, a freshman business major at Ohio Dominican, is a graduate of United Local High School in Lisbon.
“My family has always been one of entrepreneurs, with my great-grandparents, my grandparents and my parents all owning restaurants. I have learned a lot from my family about business, about how to manage people and assets. I have learned the importance of being involved and giving back to the community. One of my main goals would be that no matter what the size, my business would be involved in the community,” Guappone wrote in his scholarship essay.
