Mount Carmel College of Nursing Extends Nursing Program to Ohio Dominican University Students

March 14, 2006

COLUMBUS, OH - Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) and Ohio Dominican University (ODU) have entered into a collaborative agreement that will offer the MCCN nursing program to ODU students.

“As Catholic organizations, Ohio Dominican and Mount Carmel already share a large part of our rich heritage,” says Ann Schiele, Ph.D., R.N., President and Dean, MCCN. “Therefore, this agreement to provide nursing education to ODU students is a natural extension of the mutually supportive and warm relationship our institutions of higher learning have experienced over the years,” she adds.

Fifteen eligible ODU students will be accepted annually into the MCCN program. Students will complete their final five semesters of nursing courses on the campus of MCCN, but take their general education classes and can reside at ODU’s campus. Those students who successfully complete the nursing requirements will be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from MCCN.

“The interest in nursing education is significant among our students,” says Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D., President, ODU. “With the current shortage of nursing educators, it is advantageous for ODU to enter into this partnership from several standpoints, including the high caliber of Mount Carmel’s fine program,” says Calareso.

“This really is a win-win situation for both institutions,” Schiele asserts. “Each of our educational establishments has very high performance standards---recruiting students of the highest quality and character. The agreement benefits ODU, because it’s a cost-effective way for them to offer a program in nursing; it benefits Mount Carmel because we know that ODU students recruited to this program will have not only proven their merit with ODU’s academically rigorous curriculum, but also will have demonstrated a desire for a career in nursing,” she adds.

MCCN and ODU are both Catholic institutions of higher learning; both were founded as all-female establishments that later became co-educational institutions and each has been in existence for approximately 100 years. MCCN celebrated its Centennial in 2003; ODU is approaching its century mark in 2011.

“This agreement represents the very best in Catholic higher education,” says Calareso, “You have a collaboration between two great institutions working together to serve the needs of the community.”
